Luberda and Chism garner Beaver Pride’s weekly honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Lindsey Luberda (Sr., Champlin, Minn.) and Joe Chism (Sr., Until., Great Bend, Kan.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after outstanding athletic accomplishments during the week of March 15-21.

Luberda posted a 2-2 overall record, going 1-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action as the Beavers dropped matches to Concordia College and Minnesota State University. She accounted for all of the Beavers’ team scoring in a 7-2 nonconference loss to Concordia-Moorhead.  She battled back form a 6-1 opening-set loss to CC’s Ayah Kamel, to win the second set 7-5 and the super set tie break 10-8 to garner a point at No. 2 singles. In doubles play, she teamed up with Farrah Steinke (Sr., Pequot Lakes, Minn.) for a 8-5 win over the CC duo of Katie Edin and Kamel, 8-5. Sunday, Luberda fell to MSU’s Kathryn Gavin, 6-2, 6-4.  In doubles play, she and Steinke were defeated by Sarah Madigan and Gavin, 8-2.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first time during the 2010 campaign that the organization has honored Luberda, while it stands as the first award for a member of the BSU women’s tennis team.

Chism went 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate for BSU in doubleheader split with Wayne State College that opened the 2010 home and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season March 21. He posted two runs and two RBI in the twin-bill, while in right field, he recorded three putouts. In the 7-6 win against the Wildcats, Chism was 3-for-4, which included a two RBI single to left field in the sixth inning that gave the Beavers a 6-5 lead. He later crossed home plate to make it 7-5. BSU scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after being down 5-1 to take a 7-5 lead into the seventh. In the game one loss, he was 2-for-4 with one run, a stolen base and his eighth double of the season.

The Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award marks the first for Chism during the 2010 campaign and the second for the BSU baseball team.

The women’s tennis team will take on NSIC-foe St. Cloud State March 26 in St. Cloud, Minn. at 6 p.m. before heading for Duluth, Minn. to battle University of Minnesota Duluth in a nonconference match March 28 at 8 a.m. The BSU baseball squad hosts Augustana College March 27-28 for a four-game conference set. A doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. each day at the BSU Baseball Field.
