Big innings guide Vikings to doubleheader sweep of Beavers
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Big innings by the Augustana College Vikings led to a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader sweep of the Bemidji State University baseball team at the BSU Baseball Field March 27. The Beavers hung-around in both games, but Augie used a four-run and five-run inning, en route to a 15-8 game one win, then a seven-run and two three-run innings to take a 14-7 game two victory.

The Beavers (10-13, 1-5 NSIC) got down 6-0 after five and a half innings in game one, but cut the deficit in half with three runs on the bottom half of the inning. AC (18-10, 6-0 NSIC) responded with two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but BSU got two across in each frame as well to stay down three heading into the eighth. The Beavers were able to produce a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a two-run contest at 10-8. Senior Josh Silvernagel (MIF, Bismark, N.D.) earned the RBI in the eighth, getting a clutch 2 out single to right center to score junior Nick Jelacie (OF, Brainerd, Minn.) from third. Augustana then responded with a five-run ninth that deflated the Beaver comeback.

Junior right-hander Brian Jamieson (Maplewood, Minn.) suffered the loss, throwing five complete innings, relinquishing six runs, all earned, on eight hits. Junior Dan Bauer (RHP/MIF Bemidji, Minn.), Silvernagel and senior catcher Dan Bennett (Hayfield, Minn.) each had two hits for BSU. Bauer had two RBI and one run. Juniors Doug Peterson (RHP, Bemidji, Minn.) and Jelacie each tallied two runs.

Game two started on the right foot for the Beavers as Bauer, the starting pitcher, put the Vikings down 1-2-3 in the top of the first and then BSU scored three runs in the bottom half to grab an early 3-0 advantage. The Beavers scored all their runs with two outs. Silvernagel scored Bauer with a single to left field, taking second on an error by the left fielder. He then moved-up a base to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a passed ball. Junior third baseman Colton Smith (Waddel, Ari.) drew a four-pitch walk and then stole second to get into scoring position and keep the inning going for the home team. Freshman Riley Hirsch (C/RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) singled up the middle, but AC second baseman Drew Heithoff knocked it down behind second base. Sitting down he tried to get the ball back into the infield, but couldn’t find a handle and Smith was able to scored after hesitating around third on the Hirsch hit.

The visiting team wouldn’t let the Beavers get comfortable and posted a three-run inning of its own in the top of the second to tie the game 3-3. AC added one in the top of the fourth and then put another three-spot on the board in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. BSU cut the disadvantage in half with two in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-5, but the Vikings posted a seven-run sixth to pull away with a 14-5 lead. The Beavers scored one in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh, leaving five runners on base in the two frames, en route to the 14-6 loss.

Freshman Logan Kalis (RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) went 4-for-4 in the game and Jelacie went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI. Silvernagel added a team-high two RBI with one run scored. Bauer and junior Brian Murphy (1B, Longville, Minn.) each scored twice.

The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow at 12 p.m.
