Augustana bats down Beavers in conference doubleheader
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team couldn’t slow down the high-powered offense of Augustana College March 28 at the BSU Baseball Field, falling in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader 12-5 and 19-5.

The start of game one saw a tight match-up for the first five innings, as the Vikings (20-10, 8-0) held a 3-2 lead heading in to the sixth inning. Lead-off batter junior outfielder Nick Jelacie (Brainerd, Minn.) started the bottom of the first for BSU by taking a hit between his numbers on his back and gaining first base. Junior Dan Bauer (RHP, Bemidji, Minn.) came up next and put a bunt down the third baseline and Jelacie displayed some heads-up running, using his speed to round second and take third base. Senior Joe Chism (Great Bend, Kan.) then hit a fly to left deep enough to score Jelacie.

The Vikings responded with a run in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-1 lead, but a home run by Chism in the bottom of the fourth tied the contest at 2-2. Augie responded with a run in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, then the Vikings’ bats came alive and the road team put two up in the sixth, three in the seventh and then four in the eighth to take a commanding 12-2 advantage.

Facing a 10-run rule loss, BSU finally responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the eighth that started with a junior Doug Peterson (RHP, Bemidji, Minn.) home run off the first pitch of the frame. The runs made the score 12-5, which would be the final.

Chism and senior Josh Silvernagel (SS, Bismark, N.D.) had two-hit games, as both players went 2-for-4. Chism added two runs and an RBI. Junior third baseman Colton Smith (Waddel, Ari.) earned two RBI in the contest. Freshman righty Ryan Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) started the game for BSU, scattering 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work, allowing five runs, all earned. He fanned three batters.

The Beavers were down 2-1 after one inning in the second game of the day, but six runs in the second and 11 in the third by the Vikings ended BSU’s hopes of taking a game in the series. Augie pounded seven hits in the 11-run inning, including four home runs. BSU also committed three errors in the frame.

BSU was able to post a run in the fifth off the bat of Chism who sent his second home run of the day and fourth of the season sailing over the left field wall. The Beavers also scored twice in the bottom of the seventh as freshman Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) knocked in two runs on a second-and-third single up the middle.

Silvernagel, Hanson and junior Brian Murphy (1B, Longville, Minn.) each had two hits. Both Chism and Hanson posted two RBI. Freshman left-hander Phil Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) came into the game in the fourth inning and threw the final four frames, holding the Vikings to just one hit, while striking out five batters.

The Beavers complete their 12-game homestand that stars the conference season April 1-2 with a four-game series with Winona State University. Both doubleheaders are slated for a 12 p.m. start at the BSU Baseball Field.
