Seven homers lift Winona State past Beavers in doubleheader
BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University baseball team dropped a Northern Sun Intercollegiate doubleheader to Winona State on Saturday afternoon at the BSU Baseball Field. The Warriors hit seven home runs including three knocked over the wall by Joe Kley to win the twin bill by scores of 21-8 and 13-5.

The Beavers looked to carry their momentum from Friday’s nightcap, in which Dan Bauer (Jr., IF, Bemidji, Minn.) hit a grand slam to help lead the Beavers past the Warriors. In the bottom of the first, Josh Silvernagel (R-Sr., IF, Bismarck, N.D.) singled up the middle to score Joe Chism (Sr., Util., Great Bend, Kan.). With the bases loaded Nick Jelacie (Jr., OF, Brainerd, Minn.) hit a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Beavers a 5-1 lead heading into the second inning.

With the Beavers firing on all cylinders early in the game, right-handed pitcher Nick Monson (Fr., West St. Paul, Minn.) retired all three Winona State batters to go three up, three down in the top of the second. However, the Warriors would start to warm up only allowing three more Beaver runs on seven hits for the rest of the game.

A three-run fourth inning by Winona State would cut the lead to 6-4 before heading into the fifth where things took a turn for the worse for the Beavers. The Warriors would score 10 runs on six hits in the fifth, with the Beavers committing two errors. The biggest play of the inning came as WSU’s Joe Kley hit a three run homer over the center field wall.

The Beavers would end up losing by a score of 21-8 in eight innings.

Gaining one hit in the game, Silvernagel improved his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games.

Heading into the nightcap the cold streak continued for BSU as they allowed four runs on five hits in the first three innings. Not rolling so easily, the Beavers knocked in two runs in both the second and third innings to help keep the score tied at 4-4. Jeff Schaper (R-So., IF, Bemidji, Minn.) singled through the right side to score two runs in the second, while three errors by WSU would contribute to the two runs in the third. The first errors was committed by the shortstop which allowed Silvernagel to reach first. After Colton Smith (R-Jr., IF/OF, Waddel, Ariz.) was walked, Silvernagel attempted to steal third, but a throwing error by the catcher allowed him to advance home. With Smith on third, another error by the shortstop allowed Jelacie to reach first and Smith to cross home plate tying the game at 4-4 heading into the fourth inning.

After the flurry of errors by Winona State in the third, the Warriors would respond in the fourth putting up five runs on three hits. From then on out it would be all Winona State in the game. The Beavers would only score one more run to the Warriors nine after the end of the third inning.

While Silvernagel still scored a run for the Beavers, his appearance on base was due to an error and his hitting streak ended at 11 games.

Schaper hit 2-3 (.667) on the day recording two RBI.
Chism hit 4-8 (.500) on the day scoring two runs, and hitting one homer, his sixth of the season.

Next up for the Beavers is a mid-week trip to Marshall, Minn. where they will take on Southwest Minnesota State a NSIC doubleheader that is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6.
