Beavers fall in NSIC doubleheader to Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa -- The Bemidji State University baseball team fell 5-3 and 11-9 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Upper Iowa University Saturday.

The Beavers (12-21, 3-13 NSIC) got down 2-0 early in the first game and just couldn't put together a big inning to overcome the deficit. BSU score a single run in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings, but always faced a uphill battle in the contest. The Beavers had seven hits in the game, while UIU had eight. Freshman Logan Kalis (RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) pitched seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned on eight hits, while striking out four and walking three. Senior Josh Silvernagel (MIF, Bismark, N.D.) had the only multi-hit game for the road squad, going 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Bemidji State jumped on the Peacocks early in game two, but UIU never quit and found a way to sweep the doubleheader. BSU scored three runs in the first and then found its bats in the second, putting five runs on the board to take an 8-3 lead. The Beavers scored their three runs in the first on three solo shots over the fense, getting homeruns from senior Joe Chism (OF, Great Bend, Kan.), Silvernagel and junior Nick Jelacie (OF, Brainerd, Minn.). UIU scored three times in the bottom of the first to tie the game, but BSU used a string of hits to scored the five runs in the second.

The Peacocks scored three in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to two at 8-6, then a grand slam in the fourth put the home team in front 10-8. A solo shot by junior Coloton Smith (3B, Waddel, aAri.) made it a one-run game, but the Peacocks got the run back in the bottom half of the frame and ended the game with a 11-9 win.

Freshman Ryan Anderson (RHP,) started for BSU, throwing three innings, allowing six runs, all earned on six hits. Sophomore Ethan Branum (LHP, Brainerd, Minn.) absorbed the loss, allowing five runs, four earned on five hits. Junior Bryan Jamieson (RHP, Maplewood, Minn.) threw 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit. Chism, Silvernagel and freshman Riley Hirsch (C/RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) had two hits in the game. Chism and Silvernagel scored twice and posted two RBI.

The Beavers close the four-game set with Upper Iowa Sunday at noon.
