Beavers open home slate with four-game set versus CU April 9-10
This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team begins its home schedule April 9-10 with a four-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series at BSU Baseball Field. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., while Sunday’s twin-bill is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch.

Conference Games: All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings.
About Bemidji State:
The Beavers are 9-13 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC after going 0-4 at Augustana College April 1-2. The Beavers lost 7-3, 4-1, 2-1 and 10-0 (7). On day one BSU allowed 10 combined runs in the first two innings of each contest, getting behind early and never being able to bounce back. In game one of day two senior righty Ryan Sander threw the 2-1 game allowing just six hits to the high-powered Augie offense. Two of those hits served as the only runs as he gave-up two homeruns, including a bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk-off Viking win. The game two loss ended in seven due to the 10-run rule.

About Concordia-St. Paul: The Golden Bears are 6-5 overall and 0-2 in NSIC play after starting the conference season at home against Minnesota State, losing 11-1 and 12-2. CU had its original NSIC opener against Southwest Minnesota State canceled. Junior Bryan Lippincott owns a .468 batting average that leads the team and the NSIC. He is leading the squad in hits (22), runs (17) and is tied for the lead in RBI (15). Junior Ben Lemke owns a 1.29 ERA with a 1-0 record, making three starts. He has 14 innings of work this season, allowing four runs (two earned runs) on nine hits (two extra base) with 16 strikeouts.

Last Action vs CU: Last season the Beavers traveled to St. Paul to battle the Golden Bears in a four-game conference series where CU took three of four. The Golden Beavers won 20-8, 4-3 (8) and 12-9 before BSU took the finale 4-3. In the win Colton Smith hit a two out single in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and serve as the game-winning hit.

• BSU is on a five-game losing skid.
• The Beavers are 2-0 in extra innings this season with wins against Arizona Christian University (10-8 in 11) and Upper Iowa (3-2 in 11).
• BSU is 3-1 in games decided by one run.
• The Beavers have combined for five triples this season, last season the team posted just eight three-baggers all year long.
• BSU is 7-2 when scoring at least six runs and are 7-3 when out-hitting the opponent.
• The Beavers are 2-11 when scoring five runs or less.
• BSU hasn’t lost when holding a lead after four innings.
• The Beavers have a .967 fielding percentage, ranking first in the NSIC and No. 30 in the nation (through games 4/3).

• The Beavers defeated Upper Iowa 1-0 March 27. The last time BSU won 1-0 was March 2, 2003 at home versus Concordia University, St. Paul.
• BSU opened NSIC play 3-0. The last time they opened 3-0 in NSIC play was in 1993 with a four-game sweep of University of Minnesota-Morris in mid-April.
• The Beavers shut-out Minot State 7-0 March 11, with the 1-0 victory at UIU March 27, the Beavers have earned two shutouts for the first time since 2003 when that team had three.

Player Notes
• Sophomore Phil Bray threw a complete game shutout against Minot State March 11. He allowed just three hits and fanned four batters.
• Senior Ryan Sander also threw a complete game shutout, winning 1-0 March 27 at Upper Iowa, allowing six hits and striking out seven.
• Bray has a team-leading 24 strikeouts that ranks, 10 Ks looking to sit seventh in the NSIC.
• Sander has walked just three batters in 23 innings of work to rank tied for second in the NSIC.
• Smith has seven doubles to lead the team and sit tied for sixth in the league.
• With six stolen bases (6-for-6) Smith ranks tied for sixth in the NSIC.
• Smith has a team-best seven multi-hit games (two three hit games). Sophomore Logan Kalis is the only player this season to have four hits in a game, doing so against Valley City State March 13.
• Senior Brian Murphy (vs Minot State March 11) and freshman Zach Braun (vs Arizona Christian March 9) are the only Beavers to record four RBI in a game.

NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll:
The Beavers were tabbed 11th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released by league officials Jan. 19. The Beavers received 55 votes after closing the 2010 season with a 16-37 overall and 7-25 NSIC record, finishing 11th in the final league standings. Seniors Colton Smith (3B/OF, Waddell, Ariz.) and Ryan Sander (RHP/1B, St. James, Minn.) were tabbed Bemidji State’s Players to Watch.
