Buerkle and Sander garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University track and field standouts Kristi Buerkle (Sr., Stacy, Minn.) and Ryan Sander (Sr., INF/RHP, St. James, Minn) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances between April 4-10.

Buerkle led the BSU track and field contingent at the Holst Invitational April 18, claiming the fastest time in the 100-meter dash.  The senior posted a season-best time and meet record in the prelims of the sprint with a 12.41 seconds and would later garner top honors with a 12.45 in the finals.

Her preliminary time was just seven-hundredths off the BSU women’s track and field outdoor 100-meter record of 12.34 set by Bitsy Sorenson in the spring of 1979.

Buerkle’s finish stands as the third-fastest 100 mark of the 2011 NSIC outdoor campaign.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection is the sixth of the 2010-11 season for Buerkle and the women’s track and field team and also represents an unprecedented 18th award of the senior’s career.

Sander threw 11 complete innings in an Ironman performance April 18 leading the Bemidji State baseball team to a 2-1 victory at the University of Minnesota Duluth. After allowing one run on three hits in the first two innings, Sander allowed five hits during the next nine innings. He fanned eight batters, while walking one in his third complete game of the season, moving to 2-2 on the year.

He conceded just one extra base hit in the game, a double, and stranded seven Bulldogs on base.

Sander also batted in three games during the week, going 3-for-7 (.429), with one RBI, and a double. He had 14 putouts with three assists.

The Beaver Pride weekly award marks the second of the season for Sander (Mar. 30) and third (April 7, 2010) of his career. The award is also a second for the BSU baseball team his season.

The Bemidji State baseball team returns home this week to host University of Minnesota, Crookston today and Northern State University in a pair of twinbills Friday and Saturday.

The BSU men’s and women’s track teams are back in action Saturday when they travel to Duluth, Minn. to compete in the Northland Invitational. The meet set for the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Griggs Field at Malosky Stadium will begin at 3:30 p.m.
