Beavers swept 9-2, 2-1 at Wayne State
Sunday, March 18, 2012

WAYNE, Neb. – The Bemidji State University baseball team fell 9-2 and 2-1 at the hands of Wayne State College Sunday in a nonconference doubleheader in Wayne, Neb. The Beavers lost all four games against the Wildcats and fall to 7-7 in 2012.

The Wildcats opened a 7-0 lead through four innings before the Beavers got on the board with two runs in the fifth. Sophomore Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) recorded two RBIs in the inning with a double that plated junior Trevor Purvis (OF/P, Rio Rancho, N.M.) and senior outfielder Juan Molero (Maracaibo, Venezuela). WSC added two in the bottom of the fifth, en route to the 9-2 victory.
Purvis was the only player to record two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double in the fifth and a single in the sixth. Junior Logan Kalis (RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) suffered his second loss of the season as he threw the first four innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on six hits with four strikeouts.

WSC tallied single runs in the first and second innings to own an early 2-0 lead in game two of the day and four of the series. The Beavers got their lone run in the sixth on a senior Luke Hellquist (OF, Burnsville, Minn.) one out single to left that scored Kalis from third. BSU had the bases loaded in the inning, but the Wildcats converted a double play to end the frame. BSU went 1-2-3 in the seventh, falling short of a comeback.

Both teams recorded six hits, while the Beavers stranded seven base runners. Junior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) and sophomore Dylan Webb (INF, Phoenix, Ariz.) each recorded two hits. Marks got the two hits while also pitching all six innings for BSU as he was handed his first loss as a Beaver. He allowed two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

The contests in Wayne ended BSU’s nonconference season as the Beavers now turn their attention to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play March 24-25 at Concordia University, St. Paul. All NSIC doubleheaders will start with a seven inning game and close with a nine inning contest.
