BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University student-athletes Caley Westin (Fr., Virginia, Minn.) and Jaryd Marks (Jr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of March 12-19.
Westin led the BSU tennis team to it’s second victory of the season, 5-4 over University of Mary, in the Beavers’ 2012 home finale March 17. Westin recorded a straight-sets victory over Amanda Hennessy (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3 singles before teaming with Miranda Milless (Sr., Motley, Minn.) for an 8-2 win over Brianna Thomas and Megan Bosch in the BSU pair’s 2012 debut No. 1 doubles.

Westin is now 3-8 in singles play and is 4-7 as a doubles player.

For her efforts Westin was also named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tennis Player of the Week.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for Westin and the BSU tennis team.

Marks batted .385 March 17-18 as the Bemidji State baseball team wrapped up nonconference play for 2012 with a 0-4 weekend at Wayne State College. In 13 at-bats he recorded five hits (two doubles) and an RBI with seven total bases. He posted a .538 slugging percentage. Marks also totaled 16 putouts and three assists in the field with a 1.000 fielding percentage.

On the mound, Marks pitched all six innings of the 2-1 loss March 18 that closed the four-game series with the Wildcats. He allowed two earned runs on six hits. He fanned seven batters, while issuing three free passes. He faced 22 batters and allowed just one extra base hit, holding the Wildcats to a .273 batting average. The contest was Marks’ first start, first complete game and first loss as a Beaver.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week award is the first of Marks’ career and first of 2012 for the BSU baseball team.
