Beavers open NSIC slate at Concordia-St. Paul

This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team opens the lid on the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season March 24-25 at Concordia University, St. Paul. Saturday’s doubleheader is  scheduled for 1:30 p.m., while Sunday’s twinbill is set for a 12 p.m. start.

Conference Doubleheaders: All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings.

About Bemidji State: The Beavers went 7-7 in the nonconference play entering league action. BSU went 7-3 before traveling to Wayne State College March 17-18 and falling in all four contests. The Beavers are guided at the plate by junior transfer Jaryd Marks. He is batting .356 with a team-best 16 hits and 12 RBIs. Another transfer, junior Trevor Purvis, is hitting .341 with 15 hits, nine runs scored and nine RBIs. In four appearances junior Ryan Van Someren owns a 1.80 ERA with a 1-1 record. He has allowed two runs in 10 innings pitched with seven Ks.
Last Time Out: The Beavers fell 6-0, 9-3, and 11-2 before narrowly falling in the series finale 2-1 to the Wildcats. BSU was out-hit 36 to 23 in the four games. Early runs allowed doomed the Beavers in each contest and in all, BSU allowed 13 runs in the first two innings and 19 in the first three frames. Marks threw six complete innings in the 2-1 loss, making his first start as a Beaver. He allowed the two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.           

About Concordia-St Paul: The Golden Bears have an 8-4 nonconference record this season. CU is riding a six-game winning streak entering NSIC play. In its last action, Concordia-St. Paul posted a doubleheader sweep of Northern State University at the H.H.H. Metrodome March 15, as it picked-up 1-0 (9) and 3-1 victories. NSIC Preseason Player of the Year and preseason All-America pick senior Bryan Lippincott guides the Golden Bears at the dish with a .591 average and leads the team in hits (26), RBI (18), runs (15), walks (9) and doubles (6). Andy Fagely owns a 1.33 ERA and 2-1 record for CU. He has 20.1 innings pitched, allowing six runs (three earned) on 14 hits with 14 strikeouts.

Last Action vs CU: Last season the Beavers hosted CU for a four-game series, but was rained out of a doubleheader and was only to get two games in. The Golden Bears took both contests by the scores of 17-7 and 7-5 (10 innings). BSU last traveled to St. Paul, Minn. in 2010 and lost the first three games 20-8, 4-3 (8) and 12-9 before taking game four 4-3 on a two-run top of the seventh. Head coach Tim Bellew is 4-17 all-time against the Golden Bears as the BSU skipper, with a 1-5 road mark.
