Anderson and Bray garner Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week honors

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University golfers Courtney Anderson (Sr., RHP, Virginia, Minn.) and Phil Bray (Jr., LHP, Chatfield, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of April 2-8.
Anderson, a right-handed pitcher for the BSU softball team, posted 25 strikeouts, a 2-1 record and a 0.58 earned runs average in 24 innings pitched in two games against Minnesota State University, Moorhead and three games versus University of Minnesota Duluth April 3-6. Anderson picked up a three-hit victory in which she allowed one run with nine strikeouts against MSU Moorhead April 3. Against UMD, Anderson pitched a two-hit shutout in seven innings for BSU to pick up the team’s first victory against the Bulldogs since 1999 and give BSU its second NSIC win. She also pitched six shutout innings in a 12-inning battle against MSU Moorhead.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the third of the season for Anderson and the BSU softball team. In addition to Anderson’s previous selections, March 7 and 14, Crystal Bowen (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) was selected for the award March 28.    

Bray, a left-handed pitcher for the BSU baseball team improved to 6-1 April 5 with a win against Upper Iowa. In the victory, he allowed one run on two hits with a season-high eight strikeouts. Bray recorded a 1.29 ERA, while holding the UIU batters to a .091 batting average in 116 pitches (72 strikes). After allowing a run in the second, he gave-up one hit in the third and one hit in the fourth before sitting down the Peacocks in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Bray also got off the mound to record four assists - including a pick-off at first - to be apart of 12 of the 21 outs in the game.  

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week marks the first time Bray has been honored by the organization, while it is the third of 2012 for the BSU baseball team. Jaryd Marks (Jr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) was selected for the award Mark 21 and Logan Kalis (1B/RHP/OF, Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) earned the award March 28.

The Bemidji State softball team (9-24; 2-12 NSIC) returns to the BSU Softball Field this weekend to close the home portion of its 2012 schedule.  The Beavers host Concordia University-St. Paul Saturday and St. Cloud State Sunday.  Both doubleheaders are slated for 12 p.m. first pitches.

Following a Wednesday doubleheader with regionally-ranked St. Cloud State, the 13-13 Beavers wrap up a 14-game homestand with back-to-back twin bills versus Augustana College.  The Beavers and Vikings are slated to begin the series at noon Saturday and will start the second doubleheader of the weekend at noon Sunday at BSU Baseball Field.
