Beavers travel to U-Mary before hosting Winona State

This Week: The Bemidji State University baseball team wraps-up an eight-game road streak April 25 with a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at University of Mary at 12:30 p.m. before hosting its final weekend series of the season April 28-29 when Winona State University visits Bemidji, Minn for a pair of 12 p.m. first pitch twinbills.

Conference Doubleheaders: All conference doubleheaders will play a seven inning game first, followed by a nine inning contest. The nine inning game has a 10-run rule after seven complete innings. If game one goes into extra innings the second game will be played as a seven inning contest, instead of nine.

About Bemidji State: The Beavers (17-21, 10-14 NSIC) followed a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota, Crookston April 18 with four straight losses to the tied for No. 8 Minnesota State Mavericks. The squad won 8-3 and 6-2 at UMC, but lost at the nationally-ranked MSU 4-2, 15-3, 8-0 and 6-5. BSU totaled 27 hits in the doubleheader against the Golden Eagles, en route to the wins. Senior Mauricio Gomez went 6-for-9 in the two games and 11-for-21 for a .524 batting average in the six games last week. BSU had its best shot of upsetting the nationally-ranked Mavericks in game four, owning a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth, but a two-run walk-off homer handed MSU a 6-5 win and a series sweep. Junior lefty Phil Bray is 7-3 overall and 4-2 in NSIC play with one save. His 3.62 ERA (18 in NSIC) and .230 opposing batting average (5th in NSIC) leads the team, as does 54.2 innings pitched (6th NSIC) and 48 strikeouts (t5th in NSIC). Junior Jaryd Marks is the team’s batting average (.338), hits (44), doubles (10), RBI (26) and total bases (65) leader.             

About U-Mary: The Mauraders are 7-31 overall and 6-18 in NSIC play after going 1-3 at Winona State University April 21-22. U-Mary has lost three straight and are 2-6 in its last eight games entering the doubleheader with BSU. The Marauders are 2-12 at home this season. As a team U-Mary is batting .253 and owns a 5.75 ERA. James Carroll guides the team in batting with a .340 average and has posted 33 hits, 18 runs and 15 RBIs. Kyal Williams owns a 3.52 ERA and is 2-4 in 11 appearances and 38.1 innings. He has allowed 22 runs (15 earned) on 40 hits with 22 strikeouts.

Last Action vs U-Mary: Last season the Beavers split a mid-week double dip with the Marauders in Bemidji, Minn., winning game one 4-3 and losing game two 6-0. Head coach Tim Bellew is 7-8 all-time against U-Mary as the BSU skipper with a 2-4 record in Bismarck, N.D.

About Winona State:
Winona State is 22-15 overall and 17-9 in NSIC play. The Warriors are fifth in the conference standings after taking three of four from U-Mary and winning 12 of their last 14 games. WSU will host Wayne State College April 25 before visiting BSU. The Warriors have the second best batting average (.320) and the best slugging (.491) and on-base (.417) percentages in the league and on the bump own an ERA of 5.36 that sits seventh in the conference. The Warriors have three players batting over .345, including Nate Van Roekel, who is the team’s leader in hits (50), runs (41) and RBI (37). Kodey Simon is 4-4 with a 3.33 ERA. In 54 innings he has allowed 24 runs (20 earned) on 50 hits with 37 K’s.

Last Action vs WSU: BSU traveled to Winona, Minn. last season for a four-game series with Warriors and took one game. The Beavers downed the then-No. 18 Winona State 3-1 behind a complete game by current junior Ryan Van Someren and a three-run third inning. Head coach Tim Bellew is 3-19 all-time against the Warriors and 2-4 at home.

Team/Player Notes
• Junior lefty Phil Bray is 7-3 this season to rank tied for second in the NSIC and 34th nationally in wins. His 20 batters struck out looking is third.
• Junior Logan Kalis’ five HR is T12th in the NSIC.
• Junior Jaryd Marks has 10 doubles to rank tied for 12th in the NSIC, 26 RBIs to tie for 15th and 65 total bases to rank tied for 17th.
• Junior leadoff Trevor Purvis has walked 22 times to sit 12th in the NSIC - five behind the leader.
• Heading into the doubleheader at U-Mary senior Mauricio Gomez is on a six-game hitting streak, while junior Riley Hirsch is on a five-game streak.
• Marks posted a hit in every game in March to record a team season-best hitting streak of 14 games (March 3-31). BSU went 10-6 in March.
• The Beavers went 12-8 in the first 20 games of the season to record their best 20 game record since the 2000 team went 12-8.
• BSU was 10th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
