Beaver Pride names Ohman and Braun Athletes of the Week

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s Michelle Ohman (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Zach Braun (C, 6-0, 205, So., Lakeville, Minn.) have been named Beaver Pride Athletes of the Week after recording outstanding athletic performances during the week of April 23-29.
Ohman led the Bemidji State University track and field team in one of its busiest week of the season. The junior paced the 800-meter field at the Cobber Twilight in Moorhead, Minn. April 25 with a time of 2 minutes 15.47 seconds (2:15.47) and in the process, surpassed Kathy Schutz’s BSU record time of 2:16.27 set in 1979. In addition she ran the second leg of the Beavers’ second-place 4x100-meter relay team to a time of 50.02 and also helped the team’s 4x400-meter squad to a runner-up finish with a time of 4:07.51. Friday, Ohman and her 4x100-meter teammates bettered their time (49.98) to win the Kip Janvrin meet in Indianola, Iowa. In addition, the senior also placed second in the 400-meter dash crossing the finish line in 1:01.30.  Ohman finished the busy week of competition joining with Kirsten Maras (Sr., Ramsey, Minn.), Ashley Larva (Jr., Floodwood, Minn.) and Taylor Sautbine (Jr., Tamarack, Minn.) to post a 4:13.42 and place 16th in the 1,600-meter sprint medley at the prestigious Drake Relays Saturday.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week selection marks the first of the season for Ohman and the fifth for the BSU track and field squad. Ohman joins last week’s selection Sautbine, Maras, who garnered the award Feb. 1 and two-time recipient (Feb. 8 and 29) Larva (Jr., Floodwood, Minn.).

Braun led the BSU baseball team to a 2-4 record last week.  Going 11-for-18 on the week, he batted .611 with four home runs, eight RBIs, seven runs scored and posted a 1.278 slugging percentage. Braun was 5-for-6, with NSIC 2012 single-game highs of three homers and 14 total bases, while adding five RBIs and four runs scored in a 23-12 victory against Winona State April 28. The next day he recorded a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with three runs and two RBIs. Behind the plate, he had 15 putouts and one error for a .938 fielding percentage.

This week’s Beaver Pride Athlete of the Week marks the first time Braun has been honored by the organization, while it is the sixth of 2012 for the BSU baseball team. He follows last week’s winner Miles Campbell (So., RHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.), the April 18 honoree Mauricio Gomez (Sr., INF, Caracus, Venezuela), Jaryd Marks (Jr., RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.), the March 21 selection, Logan Kalis (1B/RHP/OF, Jr., Little Falls, Minn.), who earned the award March 28 and Phil Bray (Jr., LHP, Chatfield, Minn.), who was honored April 11.

The BSU track and field team returns to action Saturday when it travels to Moorhead, Minn. to participate in the Ron Masanz Open--the team’s final tune up for the 2012 NSIC Outdoor Championships May 11-12 in Bismarck, N.D.

The BSU baseball team is now 21-25 overall and is seventh in the NSIC standings with a 14-18 conference mark and remains in the hunt for one of six spots in the 2012 NSIC Tournament. BSU caps its 2012 regular season with four games at Northern State University May 5-6.
