TUCSON, Ariz. (Kino Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team allowed a six-run third and a four-run fifth in an 11-9 loss to Southwest Minnesota State University Wednesday in its first competition of the Tucson Invitational Games.
The Beavers opened a 3-0 lead after two innings with a three-run second, which included a bases loaded single by senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.). The Mustangs responded in the top of the third with a six-run inning on five hits and one BSU error. The inning ended the day of Beaver starter junior Miles Campbell (RHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.).
BSU got two runs back in the third to make it a 6-5 a contest. Senior Logan Kalis (RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) tripled to plate senior Jaryd Marks (1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.) and then scored on a freshman Joey Hanowski (OF, Little Falls, Minn.) sacrifice fly to right. The game was tied 6-6 after four when BSU produced another run when junior Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) came across the plate after reaching third on a triple.
The Beavers then allowed four runs on a three hits, which included a BSU error, to allow the Mustangs to open a 10-6 advantage in the fifth. The lead went to 11-6 SMSU when it produced a run in the sixth.
BSU got one run back in the sixth thanks to a Mustang error and trailed 11-7. The final two runs for the Beavers came in the seventh. Senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.) started the inning getting hit by a pitch, then BSU’s third triple of the day, this time off the bat of junior catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.), plated Purvis. Braun reached home on a sacrifice fly to center by Kalis. The Beavers left three runners on base in the eighth and stranded two in the ninth, but failed to bring a run across and close the gap.
Campbell suffered his first loss of the season and is 1-1 after allowing six earned runs on seven hits. He fanned three batters, but issued three walks. Phil Bray (Sr., LHP, Chatfield, Minn.) was the fourth BSU pitcher and went three innings. He didn’t allow a run on three hits with five K’s.
