Beavers record fifth consecutive victory with 16-3 win versus Macalester

TUCSON, Ariz. (Kino Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team closed its spring trip to Arizona with a 16-3 victory against Macalester College Sunday to record its fifth consecutive win and post a 5-1 record at the Tucson Invitational Games.

The Beavers recorded five runs on four hits in the first inning and never looked back. After loading the bases with zero outs, senior Logan Kalis (RHP/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) scored junior Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) on a sacrifice fly to center. The next batter walked and that set up a sophomore Cole Bjorge (OF, Prior Lake, Minn.) single that plated senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.) and senior catcher Riley Hirsch (Little Falls, Minn.). The lead went to 5-0 after a sophomore Jack Hegarty (INF/P, Brainerd, Minn.) double to left allowed junior Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) and Bjorge to cross home plate.

The lead would be enough for BSU starter, senior Ryan Brezinski (RHP, Regina, Saskatchewan), as he allowed single runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. He threw five innings in his third-career start for the Beavers and gave-up the three earned runs on eight hits, while fanning four batters and issuing one free pass.

A senior Matt Ellinghuysen (3B, St. Charles, Minn.) double scored two in the third to hand BSU a 7-1 lead. The score was 7-3 through five, but another five-run inning in the sixth by the Beavers pushed the lead to 12-3. The inning was highlighted by two BSU triples. The first by Kalis scored Purvis for the first run of the inning, while senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded his first three-bagger of the season to plate freshman Cody Jenkins (2B, Bemidji, Minn.) for the final run of the frame. Jenkins reached after pinch hitting for Hegarty and ripping a two-RBI double.

Four more runs in the seventh by Bemidji State pushed the lead 16-3 and would end the game after Macalester batted in the bottom half, due to the 10-run rule. Jenkins added his second double of the game that plated Braun. Baumann also doubled in the inning that scored Jenkins.

In the end, BSU recorded 17 hits and struck out just once. Every starter posted at least one hit and the Beavers totaled eight extra base hits. The seven-through-nine hitters in the line-up (Hegarty/Jenkins, Ellinghuysen and Baumann) went a combined 6-for-11 with 10 RBIs and four runs scored.

BSU now turns its attention to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule, as the team stays on the road and travels to Winona State University March 23-24 for a four-game league series. Both days a doubleheader is slated for a noon start.
