Baumann honored as NSIC Player of the Week

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Bemidji State University senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week Monday, in an announcement from the league office. The conference honor is the first of the senior’s career and the first for BSU in 2013.

Baumann led BSU to a 5-1 record at the Tucson Invitational Games March 13-17 with a .583 batting average. He posted a team-high 14 hits in 24 at bats, while batting in the nine-hole position. He recorded seven extra base hits, which include four doubles, two home runs and a triple, totaled 26 bases and posted a 1.083 slugging percentage. The shortstop added eight runs and eight RBIs with one walk and one hit by pitch. He posted a .593 on-base percentage and recorded a stolen base.

In the field he recorded a .957 fielding percentage with 16 assists, six putouts and was apart of three double plays. Baumann posted at least two hits in all six games with two, three-hit contests. The senior was a triple shy of the cycle in a win against Jamestown College March 16 after going 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs.

Baumann leads the NSIC in batting average this season with a .455 mark. His .782 slugging percentage, three home runs and 43 total bases are also a conference best. The senior ranks second in the NSIC in hits (25) and doubles (7).

The league award is the first since current junior Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) earned the honor May 1, 2012. Under eighth-year head coach Tim Bellew, five student-athletes have been named NSIC Player of the Week and three have earned the NSIC Pitcher of the Week award.

BSU (9-7) takes a five-game winning streak into the NSIC slate, as the team stays on the road and travels to Winona State University March 23-24 for a four-game league series. A doubleheader is slated to start at noon each day.
