Beavers fall in season finale; Finish regular season above .500

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) – For the first time since 2002, the Bemidji State University baseball team finished the regular season with an above .500 record. Despite falling 5-4 and 6-3 to No. 12 St. Cloud State University Sunday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at the BSU Baseball Field, the Beavers finished 22-20 overall and 13-13 in NSIC play.

The 2002 team went 19-11 overall and now the 2013 is above .500 at the conclusion of the regular season for just the 11th time in the 62 seasons of Bemidji State baseball.

In game one, the Beavers posted a two-run first to take an early 2-0 lead. Junior catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded a one out double to right center and was plated by a senior Logan Kalis (OF/RHP, Little Falls, Minn.) double to left center. The hit moved senior outfielder Trevor Purvis (Rio Rancho, N.M.) to third and was allowed to cross the plate on a ground out by senior first baseman Jaryd Marks (Cottage Grove, Minn.).

Two errors in the third enabled St. Cloud State to record a three-run frame. The lead was quickly turned back to BSU’s favor when Kalis helped his own cause with a two out, two-run home run to left that gave the Beavers a 4-3 lead.

A sac fly to left in the sixth by the Huskies knotted the game 4-4. A BSU error in the seventh enabled the Huskies to produce a run and take the late 5-4 lead. The Beavers got runners on second and third in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to get the tying run across.

Kalis threw a solid complete game, but suffered the loss and fell to 4-2. He allowed just two earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and one walk. BSU totaled nine hits, three off the bat of Kalis. He went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Two of his hits were doubles and the other was the two-run home run. Braun went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Game one got away from BSU and senior starter Ryan Anderson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) right from the get-go. SCSU recorded four runs in the first on four hits and one Beaver error. Anderson settled in after the rough frame and the Huskies were only able to score two more runs the rest of the game.

BSU totaled a three-run eighth to cut the deficit in half, but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback. SCSU totaled 12 hits, while the Beavers had just six – four of which came in the eighth.

The Beavers are headed to the NSIC Tournament for the first time since 2002. BSU earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament and will face No. 1 St. Cloud State May 8 at 11 a.m. at Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn.
