BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University Baseball Head Coach Tim Bellew has announced the 2014 schedule. The Beavers will begin the season March 7-15 with 10 games on their spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference slate is scheduled to begin on the road at Upper Iowa University March 29-30.
The demolition of the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. has already begun and has forced the Beavers and many of the other NSIC teams to look elsewhere for games. BSU is adding more games to its spring trip than usual, while heading to Missouri and Kansas March 23-25 for five games before league contests start.
After the Beavers open NSIC play at UIU March 29-30, the team stays on the road and travels to Sioux Falls, S.D. to battle Augustana College April 2 and University of Mary April 5-6 in Bismarck, N.D. All NSIC dates are a scheduled doubleheader and the teams will play a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning contest.
Before opening their home season, the Beavers will travel to Fargo, N.D. to play NCAA Division I North Dakota State University April 7 in a nine-inning contest beginning at 5 p.m. The contest will count towards Bemidji State’s overall record and serve as the first game against Division I competition under Bellew since 2006 when the Beavers traveled to play South Dakota State University when the Jackrabbits were in transition from Division II to Division I.
The home season is scheduled to begin with an NSIC doubleheader April 9 at BSU Baseball Field versus Wayne State College. BSU remains at home April 12-13 when Winona State University visits Bemidji.
Following a midweek roadie to Minnesota State University, Mankato, the Beavers will host their next six games against Concordia University, St. Paul April 18-19 and University of Minnesota Crookston April 23.
Bemidji State closes its regular season road schedule April 26-27 at St. Cloud State University and April 30 at Southwest Minnesota State University. The Beavers wrap the 2014 regular season at home May 2-3 when Minot State University travels east on Highway 2.
The NSIC Tournament is scheduled to take place in Sioux Falls, S.D. May 7-10. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season according to conference winning percentage will move on to the conference tournament. The tournament champion advances to the NCAA Regional Tournament as an automatic qualifier.
The Beavers return just four starters and 11 letterwinners from last season’s 25-22 team. The 2013 win total tied for the second most victories in program history. After posting a 13-13 NSIC record to earn the No. 8 seed in the NSIC Tournament, the Beavers made a run to the NSIC Tournament Championship game. Bellew was named NSIC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season, while five players earned all-conference awards, which included Logan Kalis, who went on to earn All-America honors.
