Beavers pegged ninth in NSIC Preseason Baseball Coaches’ Poll

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Bemidji State University baseball team finished 13-13 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in 2013 to finish eighth and return to the conference tournament for the first time since 2008. Wednesday, the Beavers were pegged to finish ninth in the 2014 Preseason Baseball Coaches’ Poll.

Seniors Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) and Miles Campbell (RHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.) were named BSU’s Players to Watch.

Minnesota State University, Mankato, the 2013 NCAA Division II national runner-up, earned 14 of 15 first place votes and totaled 196 points. St. Cloud State University earned 179 points for second, while Augustana College picked up the remaining first place nod and recorded 169 points. Wayne State College and Winona State University each tallied 150 points to tie for fourth. BSU earned 92 points, as sixth through ninth in the poll was separated by 25 points.

THe NSIC Preseason Player of the Year was University of Minnesota Duluth's Alex Wojciechowski, while the NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year was Jason Hoppe of Minnesota State.

Each NSIC head coach ranked each team (besides own team) from 14 to 1 with the top team receiving 14 points, second 13, third 12, etc.

The baseball season gets underway Feb. 1 with NSIC play beginning March 22. The top eight teams in the final NSIC standings earn a berth to the 2014 NSIC Baseball Tournament. The double elimination tournament takes place May 7-10 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

BSU began practice Jan. 13, as ninth-year head coach Tim Bellew welcomed four starters, 11 letterwinners and 23 newcomers to this season’s squad.

A group of 18 student-athletes from last season’s roster remain. Among the returning starters are captains Chad Hanson (Sr., OF, St. Paul, Minn.), Braun, Joey Hanowski (So., INF/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) and Campbell.

The Beavers will begin the season March 7-15 with a 10-game spring break trip to Tucson, Ariz. The NSIC slate is scheduled to begin on the road at Upper Iowa University March 29-30 with the first home contest set for April 9 versus Wayne State College.

The 2013 Beavers went 25-22 overall to record the second most wins in program history and after sneaking into the postseason tournament as the eighth seed, BSU made a run to the NSIC Tournament Championship Game. Bellew was named NSIC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season, while five players earned all-conference awards, which included Logan Kalis, who went on to earn All-America honors.

#36 Zach Braun (Sr., C, Lakeville, Minn.)

2013 Daktronics All-Central Region Second Team2013 All-NSIC Second Team… Started 41 out of 43 games for BSU (19 at catcher, nine at designated hitter, six in right field, four at first and three in left field)… Recorded a .345 batting average to rank 20th in the league and totaled 18 doubles (third in NSIC – 0.42 doubles per game finished 18th nationally), 84 total bases (11th in league) and 58 hits (T-9th in NSIC)… Added 31 runs and 24 RBIs… The junior’s .989 fielding percentage was good for 14th in the league… Totaled 179 putouts (T-19th in NSIC) with 11 assists and just three errors… Owned 15 multiple hit games, which included a five-hit effort against Upper Iowa (April 21)... Recorded six multiple RBI games, which included four RBIs versus Minot State (March 16)... Posted a 10-game hitting streak March 29-April 20.

#27 Miles Campbell (Sr., RHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.)

Started six games for the Beavers and appeared in 13 games… Pitched 43.2 innings with an ERA of 4.12… Totaled 39 strikeouts and issued only seven walks… Had a record of 1-1 with one save… Hurled five scoreless innings versus Sioux Falls (Feb. 16) and allowed just two hits with three strikeouts in his lone win of the season.
