Beavers sweep doubleheader versus Mount Marty, 3-1 and 5-4 (8)

TUCSON, Ariz. (Keno Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team earned a pair of victories Sunday in a nonconference doubleheader versus Mount Marty College at the Keno Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz. The Beavers won 3-1 in game one, then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 5-4 extra innings win in game two.

The Beavers took game one behind the arm of junior Tyler Saeugling (RHP, Dubuque, Iowa). He threw five innings and allowed the one run on six hits. He fanned four batters and issued just one walk.

Saeugling allowed the one run in the first inning, but the Beavers scored all three runs in the third inning, which proved to be enough for the victory. BSU totaled five hits in the third frame, which included an RBI triple by senior Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.).

Hanson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Cole Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.) went 2-for-3 and added an RBI, while freshman Collin Eckman (SS, Little Falls, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Senior Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) plated run for the Beavers in the third and fifth innings and through seven frames, the Game two was tied 2-2. The Lancers batted at the top of the eighth and produced two runs to open a 4-2 lead. The Beavers then posted three runs in the bottom of the eighth to walk-off with the 5-4 victory and twin bill sweep. BSU posted three hits, but two Lancer errors on the same sequence aided the three-run inning. Bjorge’s, bases loaded, one-out single sent home the game-winning run.

Freshman Terry Hadden (RHP, Elk River, Minn.) threw the final two innings and earned the victory. Sophomore Jesse Katz (Deerfield, Ill.) started and hurled six strong innings. He allowed two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Braun went 3-for-3 in game two with a pair of RBIs. Bjorge recorded his third multi-hit game of the early season, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Beavers continue its 10-game spring trip with a nine-inning game March 11 versus St. Cloud State University.
