TUCSON, Ariz. (Keno Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team suffered 4-2 and 5-0 losses at the hands of Southwest Minnesota State University Wednesday in a nonconference doubleheader at the Keno Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.

After three and a half scoreless innings, Southwest Minnesota State (8-4) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to open a 2-0 lead. The Beavers (3-4) bounced right back and tallied two runs of their own in the top of the fifth to knot the contest 2-2. Senior catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded a one-out double to right field and then would score with two outs on a wild pitch. Senior Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) scored the second run when he was driven home by a sophomore Joey Hanowski (INF/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) single through the right side.

SMSU got one back in the bottom half of the fifth to take the 3-2 lead, then added an insurance run in the sixth to take the 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh. BSU was unable to produce any late game magic and suffered the 4-2 loss.

The Beavers were outhit 10-5. Sophomore Tyler Nelson (3B, Hayfield, Minn.) was the only player for BSU to produce two hits, as he went 2-for-3. Freshman right-hander Terry Hadden (Elk River, Minn.) hurled 5.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Walks and errors doomed the Beavers in game two, as did a lack of offense. Freshman Luke Benge (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) made his collegiate debut on the mound, but the outing wouldn’t go as planned. He recorded just one out, while allowing three runs on four walks and two hit batsmen. Freshman righty Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, Wis.) relieved Benge and went 5.2 innings. He allowed two runs (both unearned) on three hits with two strikeouts.

The Beavers failed to produce a hit in game two, while their two miscues led to single runs for the Mustangs in the second and sixth innings. Freshman Ben Boser (INF, Pierz, Minn.) drew two walks to serve as the only Beaver to reach first successfully from an at-bat. He was thrown out at second on both occasions and no BSU runner made it to second base.

Bemidji State has a day off before resuming its spring trip in Tucson. The Beavers battle Northern State University March 14 in a nonconference doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
