BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced its weekly awards Tuesday and in the process honored Bemidji State University baseball freshman Ryan Rumpca (RHP, Ramsey, Minn.) as NSIC Pitcher of the Week. The league recognition is the second for BSU this season, as senior Zach Braun (C, Lakeville, Minn.) was named NSIC Player of the Week March 10.

Rumpca made three appearances April 2-7 during which the Beavers went 3-0. He hurled seven innings and didn't allow a run, gave up just one hit and collected a win and a save. He faced 22 batters and allowed the opposition to post just a .050 batting average. He fanned eight batters and issued only one walk.

Rumpca threw 5.2 innings of relief April 7 at University of Mary and picked up his first-career win after allowing just one hit and striking out eight with zero walks. Earlier in the day, the freshman pitched the sixth inning when BSU was leading 10-8 and didn't allow a hit. His first-career save came in a 4-3 victory at Augustana College April 2. He entered the game with two outs in the seventh and posted the final out with the bases loaded.

Under ninth-year head coach Tim Bellew, seven student-athletes have been named NSIC Player of the Week and five have earned the NSIC Pitcher of the Week award. The last pitcher of the week recipient was Jaryd Marks, April 30, 2013.

The Beavers (11-10, 5-3 NSIC) were scheduled to travel to North Dakota State University Tuesday for a nonconference nine-inning game, but the contest has been canceled. The cancellation closes the nonconference portion of the 2014 schedule. Bemidji State will assess the field conditions of BSU Baseball Field and make a decision about hosting Wayne State College (15-11, 8-4 NSIC) Wednesday in an NSIC doubleheader. The home opener is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
