Beavers fall twice to No. 3 Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU Baseball Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team lost 7-4 and 8-0 at No. 3 Minnesota State University, Mankato Tuesday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at MSU Baseball Complex.

The Beavers (13-14, 7-7 NSIC) scored a rare first inning run in game one to open the scoring and own a 1-0 lead after one. BSU had entered the game getting outscored 31-10 in the first inning. The run came across on a two-out single to center field by senior catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.).

BSU went scoreless in the second and third frames, while the Mavericks (30-7, 18-4 NSIC) posted two runs in each inning to take the 4-1 advantage after three.

The Beavers responded in the top half of the fourth and plated three runs to knot the contest 4-4. The fourth started with a walk, as sophomore Joey Hanowski (INF/OF, Little Falls, Minn.) drew a full count free pass to first. Braun singled down the left field line and Hanowski advanced to third. Braun stole second to set up second and third with zero outs for senior Cole Bjorge (OF, Prior Lake, Minn.), who grounded out to second to plate Hanowski. Freshman Bo Schmitz (C, St. Cloud, Minn.) walked, then a junior Dylan Webb (1B, Ahwatukee, Ariz.) groundout allowed Braun to score from third. Freshman Terry Hadden (RHP/OF, Elk River, Minn.) came to the plate and delivered a double to left field to score Schmitz from second and knot the contest 4-4.

Minnesota State quickly regained the lead in the bottom half of the fourth with a single run, then a two-spot in the fifth handed the nationally-ranked Mavericks a 7-4 advantage that would hold for the win.

The Beavers recorded just three hits, while the Mavericks totaled 11. Freshman Derek Masberg (RHP, Kilkenny, Minn.) suffered the loss (1-1) for BSU, as he allowed five earned runs in four innings on nine hits with three strikeouts. Braun recorded two of the three Bemidji State hits, as he went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

In game two, BSU totaled five hits and drew four walks to leave seven runners on base. The Beavers were only down 2-0 after single runs in the first and third innings for the Mavericks, but a six-run eighth ended any upset bid by Bemidji State. The Mavericks totaled 10 hits with three coming in the eighth.

Right-hander Hadden started and hurled 7.1 innings before exiting the game in the eighth. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts, a walk and two hit batsmen. Nelson and Bjorge each tallied two hits for the Beavers.

The Beavers return home April 18-19 to host Concordia University, St. Paul (18-8, 10-6 NSIC) in an NSIC four-game series.
