DASSEL, Minn. (Dassel City Field) – The Bemidji State University baseball team lost twice to No. 22 St. Cloud State University Friday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at Dassel City Field in Dassel, Minn. BSU lost game one 4-2 before it suffered a game two loss of 5-1.
The Beavers (18-17, 12-10 NSIC) owned a 2-0 lead and outhit St. Cloud State (30-9, 19-6 NSIC) 8-5 in game one, but couldn’t capitalize on five SCSU errors and lost game one 4-2.
Three BSU players recorded two hits. Freshman Bo Schmitz (C, St. Cloud, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with both RBIs, while sophomore Tyler Nelson (INF, Hayfield, Minn.) and senior catcher Zach Braun (Lakeville, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Beavers got on the board first in game one when Schmitz delivered a two-out single to right field that scored Nelson from second. BSU went up 2-0 in the third when Schmitz again came up and singled through the right side to plate Braun.
Bemidji State starter freshman Terry Hadden (RHP, Elk River, Minn.) had allowed just one hit through three innings, but in the fourth a lead-off single then a blast over the right field fence allowed the Huskies to knot the game 2-2.
The Beavers had bases loaded and no outs to lead off the sixth, thanks to a hit and two SCSU errors, but would leave the inning with zero runs and the Huskies capitalized in the bottom half, scoring two runs to open a 4-2 lead. Bemidji State went down in order in the seventh and the road team fell by the wo runs.
Hadden suffered the loss and moved to 3-3 after allowing four runs on just four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Senior Chad Hanson (OF, St. Paul, Minn.) led off game two with a walk and came around to score Bemidji State’s first and only run of the nightcap when sophomore Joey Hanowski (3B, Little Falls, Minn.) recorded a single through the left side.
Both Hanowski and senior outfielder Cole Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.) recorded two hits and a double to account for all of BSU’s four hits, while St. Cloud State totaled eight base knocks. The Huskies scored unearned three runs in the third on three hits and two costly Bemidji State errors, which proved to be enough for the victory.
Redshirt-freshman righty Mark Kosmalski (Oakdale, Minn.) hurled 7.1 innings and suffered the loss (1-3). He allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Beavers and Huskies conclude the NSIC four-game series Saturday at Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
