SMSU sweeps BSU in NSIC doubleheader; Weekend series pushed back

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Ronken Field) – The Bemidji State University baseball team dropped a pair Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contests Thursday in a road doubleheader versus Southwest Minnesota State University. BSU lost 4-1 and 13-2 (7) in games moved from Marshall, Minnesota to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and played at Ronken Field on the campus of Augustana College.

The Bemidji State regular season-finale and final home weekend of 2014 has been pushed back a day to Saturday and Sunday, May 3-4. Doubleheaders are scheduled for each day with the times to be announced.

The losses bumped the Beavers (19-20, 13-13 NSIC) out of the top eight in the NSIC standings and inserted the Mustangs (23-20, 14-13 NSIC) into the No. 8 position. Each team has four games left, as the squads vie for the eighth and final spot in the NSIC Tournament. Bemidji State hosts Minot State (17-21, 11-13 NSIC) Saturday and Sunday, while SMSU is home against Northern State University (27-14, 20-10 NSIC) for the final weekend of the regular season. Sunday, the 2014 NSIC Tournament bracket is announced, advancing the top eight teams from the final regular season standings.

Game 1

A fifth inning sophomore Tyler Nelson (SS, Hayfield, Minn.) triple to left center field scored freshman Logan Riedel (OF, Clarissa, Minn.) to tie the contest 1-1 after SMSU plated a first inning run.

SMSU came back in the bottom half of the sixth and scored three to take the 4-1 lead into the seventh where it put the Beavers down in order to take the game one victory.

Junior right-hander Tyler Saeugling (Dubuque, Iowa) went the distance for BSU and allowed four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

The hits in game one were even 7-7. Sophomore Joey Hanowski (3B, Little Falls, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with a double.

Game 2

The Mustangs scored six runs in game two before BSU got on the board with a run in the fifth inning. SMSU responded by lifting a home run over the left field fence to open an 8-1 lead through five. The Beavers scored a run in the sixth, but Southwest Minnesota State went off for five in the bottom half to take the shortened game two victory 13-2 in seven innings and sweep the league twin bill.

BSU totaled seven hits, getting two each from Nelson and Hanowski. Freshman Ben Boser (INF, Pierz, Minn.) went 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.

Junior righty Mike Hanson (Cass Lake, Minn.) suffered the loss (1-1) after hurling three innings and allowing five runs and three hits with two walks and a strikeout.
