Beavers fall in season opening doubleheader at Washburn, 20-4 and 5-1

TOPEKA, Kan. – Bemidji State University baseball opened its 2015 season with a doubleheader at Washburn University Friday afternoon where it dropped both game by scores of 20-4 and 5-1.

Bemidji State, now 0-2 overall, will be back in action as they head to Emporia State University for three games Feb. 14-15. BSU is scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m. with a single nine-inning game Sunday at 12 p.m. from Glennen Field in Emporia, Kan. The Ichabods take a 2-0 start on the season with the sweep.

In game one, the Ichabods got their scoring moving right in the first inning as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Beavers off seven hits and three errors. David Gauntt hit a three run homerun for the highlight of the inning. Washburn would go onto score three runs in the second to make it a 13-0 game. 

Jack Hegarty homered in the top of the fifth inning to put the Beavers on the board against Washburn but the Ichabods moved its lead to 16-1, scoring three more runs in the sixth.

It was not until the seventh inning when Dylan Webb would get another run for BSU as he nailed a homerun, while later in the inning Hegarty scored from third and Logan Riedel scored from second as Collin Eckman reached on a throwing error by Ichabods’ second baseman to make it a 16-4 game.

Washburn capped off the game scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 20-4 victory over the Beavers.

Jesse Katz recorded the loss for the Beavers on the mound, allowing 10 runs in 0.1 innings of work. Also seeing action on the mound was Mark Kosmalski (4.2), Collin Rutledge (2.0) and Steven Erickson (1.0). Maustin Otterstatter charted the win for WU, pitching five innings to only allow three hits and one run.

In game two, Washburn went on a 5-0 run over Bemidji State, scoring two runs in the second inning, one in the third and two in the fourth. The Ichabods scored their five runs on six hits and two errors total.

BSU was able to get the bats going in the fifth inning as Webb led off with a double to left field and scored as Riedel grounded out to second. The Beavers ended its second game producing four hits on 26 at-bats.

On the mound for the Beavers was Jack Stigman, allowing 11 hits and five runs in six innings of work for the loss, while Washburn’s Mik Hefferan earned the win in five innings of work.
