Beavers drop two against Rockhurst Friday, 14-3 and 8-5

TOPEKA, Kan. – Bemidji State University baseball went on to play Rockhurst University Friday morning in a doubleheader series from Bettis Family Sports Complex in Topeka, Kan. The Beavers battled hard but were unable to find the win as they fell by scores of 14-3 and 8-5.

Bemidji State, now 0-6 overall, and Rockhurst University will be back in action March 7 for another doubleheader from Bettis Family Sports Complex before the Beavers make their way to Arizona. Game one is set to start at 11 a.m. CT. The Hawks improve their record to 5-3 on the season.

Bemidji State Highlights

  • In both games the Beavers were the first to score. In game one, Mason Bellew grounded out for the RBI and in game two it was Jack Hegarty with a double to left center.
  • Leading the way in game one was Matt Mastantuono as he went 3-for-3 and tallied two RBI. Mastantuono finished the day going a perfect 4-for-4 including a double in game one.
  • Terry Hadden and Joey Hanowski each went 2-for-3 in game one with Hadden recording one run.
  • Pitcher of record in game one was Mark Kosmalski with 2.2 innings of work for a 0-1 record on the season. Also seeing action on the mound was Parker Havel for 1.1 innings and Evan Rowe for two innings. Kosmalski and Rowe each pitched two strikeouts, while Rowe only allowed two hits.
  • Game two was a battle for the Beavers as they held a 1-0 lead until the third inning but then battled back to bring in the seventh scoring three run for an 8-5 game.
  • Nick Hovila got the bats going in the seventh with a single and then scored off a double by Tyler Nelson. A single by Logan Riedel would score one run and followed by another run off a ground out by Hanowski for an 8-5 ending two batters later.
  • Hovila and Nelson each went 2-for-3 and scored one run in game two. Nelson also charted one RBI.
  • Jack Hegarty was 2-for-4 at the plate including two doubles and a two-out RBI.
  • Starting for the Beavers on the mound in game two was Jesse Katz for 4.1 innings of work and struck out two batters. Coming into the game as relief was Michael Herd for 1.2 innings, striking out one batter and allowed only two hits.

Rockhurst Highlights

  • Rockhurst ended the doubleheader with 22 runs off 25 hits and committed two errors.
  • Caleb Baker led the Hawks in game one going a perfect 3-for-3, including two doubles and scored three runs and four RBI. Baker finished the day 6-for-6.
  • Brett Marr and Patrick Burns each went 3-for-5 in game one, while Marr added four RBI and Burns tallied one RBI and three runs.
  • Marr also charted three hits in game two going 3-for-4, including a double to end the two-game stand 6-for-9.
  • Joe Huber pitched for the Hawks in game one allowing only three runs on eight hits and struck out nine BSU batters. Huber now holds a 2-1 season record.
  • The Hawks pitched one player all seven innings with Alex Merithew on the mound. Merithew allowed only 10 hits, walked one BSU batter and pitched three strikeouts.
