Beavers get first win with split against Rockhurst

TOPEKA, Kan. – Bemidji State University baseball ended its time in Topeka, Kan. Saturday afternoon with another doubleheader against Rockhurst University from Bettis Family Sports Complex. The Beavers split their doubleheader against Rockhurst as they fell in game one by a score of 5-1 and earned their first win of the season in game two, 5-3.

Bemidji State, now 1-7 overall, will be back in action Monday, March 9 as they take on St. Cloud State University in a nonconference matchup from Phoenix, Ariz. on the campus of Arizona Christian University. First pitch is set for an 11 a.m. CT start. The Hawks are now 6-4 on the season. 

Bemidji State Highlights

  • The Beavers battled hard to earn the split over Rockhurst Saturday.
  • In game one Bo Schmitz led the Beavers as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, including one double.
  • Also recording hits in game one was Tyler Nelson, Scott Litchy and Mason Bellew.
  • Jack Stigman is the pitcher of record with four innings of work on the mound as he struck out four batters and allowed four runs. Stigman is now 0-2 on the season with the loss in game one.
  • Derek Masberg saw two innings of action on the mound.
  • In game two it was the Beavers making plays to earn their first win of the season.
  • Jake Braun and Terry Hadden led the squad going 3-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively. Hadden posted a RBI triple to right field in the fourth inning to tie the game 3-3.
  • Hadden ended game two, scoring one run and earning two RBI.
  • Dylan Webb hit a double down the right field line for an RBI in the second inning.
  • With a tie game going into the seventh and final inning of game two, the Beavers were determined to get a victory. Logan Riedel grounded out to second base to put BSU up by one and Collin Eckman followed with a single to second for a 5-3 lead.
  • BSU came out in the bottom of the seventh inning for a one-two-three effort earning the win.
  • Pitcher of record in game two with seven innings on the mound was Jack Hegarty. Hegarty only allowed six hits and struck out 10 batters. He moves his record to 1-0 on the season.

Rockhurst Highlights

  • Rockhurst got on the board first in game one, scoring four runs in the third inning off of five hits and one error.
  • Blake Petersen hit a two RBI double to right center in the third to make it a 4-0 game.
  • Brett Marr led the team going 3-for-4, including a double and scored one run.
  • Pitcher of record for the Hawks in game one was Michael Lydon-Lorson as he struck out five and only allowed one run in seven innings of work. Lydon-Lorson is now 2-0 on the season.
  • In game two, centerfielder Chase Leavy led the team going 2-for-2 at the plate, while teammate Jeremy Lufft followed going 3-for-4.
  • The Hawks’ Zach Loeffelholz was the pitcher of record in game two with six innings of work, allowing eight hits and four run. He moves his record to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
  • Entering to pitch the final inning for Rockhurst was Grant Otte, allowing one run on two hits.
