TUCSON, Ariz. – Bemidji State University baseball played its first game in Tucson Wednesday afternoon as they took on NSIC foe Southwest Minnesota State University in a nonconference matchup. A high scoring game led the Beavers to their third victory of the season by a final score of 17-8.
SMSU jumped out to a quick start in the top of the first as Tanner Neale and Patrick Rients hit one-out singles before Austin Stubbs smashed his team-leading fourth homer of the season to stake the Mustangs to a 3-0 lead.
Jarred Carlson came out in the fourth inning, drilling a one-hopper off the center field fence and raced around the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run for a 5-2 lead. The lead would not last long though as BSU put up three runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a solo home run over the right field fence by Scott Litchy to tie the game up 5-5.
Bemidji State extended the lead in the fifth with a three-run triple by Bellew and a single by Logan Riedel for a 9-5 lead. SMSU answered in the top of the sixth as Carlson came through again—this time hitting the ball over the fence—for a three-run homer to cut the deficit to 9-8.
BSU then added three insurance runs in the seventh inning, two of which were unearned and then added another five runs in the eighth, including a double to left field by Bo Schmitz to seal a 17-8 victory.
The Beavers finished with 18 hits and committed no errors with Litchy leading the way going a perfect 4-for-4. Webb and Bellew each went 3-for-4 and scored three runs each, while Bellew posted four RBI.
Earning the win and the start on the mound was Jesse Katz with 5.1 innings of work and striking out six batters, while Jack Hegarty earns the save in 1.2 innings of action. Katz is now 1-2 on the season and Hegarty earns his first save.
