SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Bemidji State University baseball team was back on the road again this weekend as it took on University of Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon. The Beavers came out strong to have its best series so far this season to earn the sweep by scores of 8-1 and 16-10.
In game one, the Beavers got the bats going in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead scoring two runs off a double by Scott Litchy and one run on a double by Dylan Webb. BSU extended its lead to 5-0 over the Cougars in the third as Tyler Nelson started with a single and then a couple USF errors allowed the Beavers to score two runs.
The Beavers hit four straight singles in the fifth to make it an 8-0 game before Sioux Falls was able to get on the board in the bottom half of the inning off a wild pitch. Bemidji State would hold on to an 8-1 edge in a seven-inning game.
Terry Hadden pitched all seven innings to earn the win, allowing only five hits and struck out four batters. Hadden is now 2-4 on the season.
Sioux Falls started game two strong to take a 6-0 lead after three innings of action. Highlighting the Cougars edge was Mac McAfee hitting a two RBI triple to left field in the third after two doubles brought in runs n the second inning.
Bemidji State was not going to give up as they came back with three home runs. Scott Litchy tallied back-to-back home runs with a three-run bomb in the fourth and a grand slam in the fifth for a 7-6 edge. Webb followed with a first pitch solo home run in the fifth for an 8-6 lead.
The Cougars tied the game up 8-8 in the bottom of the fifth, which held till the seventh inning when the Beavers’ Jack Hegarty posted a two-run home run to left field for 10-8 game. The eighth inning was another productive one for BSU as Bo Schmitz hit a three-run home run, Litchy tallied a triple and Joey Hanowski batted a double to highlight the inning for a 16-8 lead.
USF was able to get two runs in the final inning on a double by Noah Durkin but it was not enough as the Beavers earned their first doubleheader sweep of the 2015 season on a 16-10 victory.
On the mound to earn the victory for BSU was Jack Stigman, allowing seven hits and striking out seven in five innings of work. Stigman moves his record to 1-3 on the season.
Bemidji State, now 7-14, 4-2 NSIC, and Sioux Falls will be back in action Sunday for another doubleheader series with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. from Harmodon Field. The Cougars are now 5-17 overall and 2-4 in the NSIC.
