Beavers fall to Minnesota Duluth in Saturday’s doubleheader

DULUTH, Minn. – The Bemidji State baseball team and University of Minnesota Duluth were back in action Saturday, ending a four-game series from Bulldog Park. Bemidji State fell in the dual by scores of 9-5 and 14-4.

Bemidji State, now 10-29, 7-17 NSIC, continues its road stand Wednesday, April 22 as it travels to St. Cloud State University for a midweek twin bill before having the weekend off. The Bulldogs improve to 23-11 overall and 17-7 in the NSIC with the sweep. 

Bemidji State Highlights

  • In game one, Collin Eckman led the team going 3-for-3, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning to trail 8-5. Eckman added two runs scored and his three RBI led the squad.
  • BSU was leading 2-0 after the second inning in game one as Dylan Webb doubled to right field in the top half of the inning.
  • Jack Hegarty was on the mound and pitcher of record for BSU with 3.1 innings of work. Hegarty allowed six earned runs and struck out four.
  • Also seeing action was Michael Herd and Ben Boser, each giving up one run.
  • The Beavers once again jumped out to a lead over UMD with a 4-0 edge after two innings but were unable to hang on.
  • BSU tallied four hits in game two, with Tyler Nelson, Joey Hanowski, Scott Litchy and Webb each posting one. Nelson’s hit was the only double of the game for the Beavers.
  • Both teams pitched four players, while Cody Benson was the pitcher of record in 1.1 innings of work. All four pitchers for BSU allowed three earned runs.

Minnesota Duluth Highlights

  • Sophomore Junior left-hander Bo Hellquist went the distance in game one, picking up his second victory of the season in six starts, allowing just one run on the long ball and three total hits while striking out seven.
  • Junior righty Austin Vaske tossed six innings in game two, allowing three earned runs while striking out one, scattering six hits and three walks to pick up his third win of the year.
  • Sophomore righty Colton Sinning pitched in and out of trouble in the seventh, striking out two to finish out the game without allowing a run.
  • Five different Bulldogs launched home runs for UMD: sophomore left fielder Grant Farley and juniors, right fielder Spencer Diedrich, third baseman Kyle Comer, first baseman Alex Wojciechowski and outfielder Josh Denisen.
  • Comer and Wojciechowski each had four RBIs, while the pair, along with Hellquist and Farley each crossed the plate three times.
  • Eight players had at least one RBI for UMD while nine had a run scored.
