BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University baseball team begins spring practices Monday while first pitch of the 2016 season is under five weeks away.
The Beavers return 25 student-athletes from last season and bring in 10 new faces. Infielder Jack Hegarty led the team in 2015 with a .380 batting average, hitting five home runs and 16 doubles while driving in 29 RBIs. His .653 slugging percentage led the team while he added an on-base percentage of .480. Hegarty split his time pitching, making six starts in nine appearances on the mound. He totaled 39.1 innings with three complete games.
Infielder Joey Hanowski, outfielder/pitcher Scott Litchy and infielder Tyler Nelson also totaled batting averages over .300 last season. Litchy tied Hegarty and infielder Collin Eckman for the team lead with five home runs.
Head Coach Tim Bellew enters his 11th season with the team as the program’s third winningest skipper. He holds an overall record of 169-307-1 and a mark of 105-187 in the NSIC.
Bemidji State opens the 2016 schedule Feb. 12-14 with a four-game series at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. The Beavers and Lions will play single games on Feb. 12 and 14 with a double-header scheduled for Feb. 13.
