Beavers Starters Go the Distance in Two Wins

BISMARCK, N.D. (Bismarck Municipal Ballpark) – The Bemidji State baseball team took the first two games versus University of Mary by scores of 7-1 and 8-0. Both starters threw complete games while the offense stole five bases over the day.


University of Mary: 1 Bemidji State: 7

The Beavers scored the first runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Collin Eckman started off with a single then was brought around by a Joey Hanowski hit by pitch, a Nick Hovila sacrifice bunt and then a RBI single by Tyler Nelson. Hanowski would score when the Marauders’ catcher over threw the second basemen when Nelson stole second base a few pitches later. Nelson capped off the scoring when he was drove in by a single off the bat of Logan Riedel.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning Scott Litchy doubled to right center field and then advanced to third base on a throwing error by the right fielder. Olszewski followed with a single through the right side to score Litchy.

In the top of the seventh inning the Beavers took advantage of multiple University of Mary errors, starting with Litchy reaching base again with a single then advanced to second on an another throwing error. Olszewski then reached on a throwing error by the second basemen that scored Litchy for the second time. Olszewski would then score on another error off the bat of Duane Miller. Mason Bellew followed the string of errors with a single to left field that scored Riedel for the seventh run of the game and the third run of the inning.

Bemidji State received a strong outing from starting pitcher Terry Hadden (1-6). Hadden recorded his first win of the season with a complete game. He only allowed one earned run on five scattered hits while striking out two batters. 

The Beavers took advantage of six University of Mary errors and were aggressive on the bases, stealing four bases in game one while four Beavers recorded two hits.


University of Mary: 0 Bemidji State: 8

Joey Hanowski led off game two with a double down the left field line then was brought in on a Tyler Nelson single up the middle to give the Beavers an early lead.  

Bemidji State put up six runs in the top of the second inning. The scoring spree started when Duane Miller scored on a Hanowski fielder’s choice to the second basemen. This was quickly followed by

Nelson singling in Mason Bellew then Scott Litchy singled through the right side of the infield, driving in Nick Hovila and Collin Eckman. Another single from Gunner Olszewski drove in Nelson then Logan Riedel capped off the inning with a single to right field that scored Litchy.

The scoring continued in the top of the seventh inning when Reidel walked then made his way around the bases on a steal then scored on a double off of the bat of Eckman.

The Beavers got another complete game from their starter, this time from Jack Stigman (3-4). Stigman threw a complete game shutout with five strike outs and only five hits. The Bemidji State defense turned two double plays behind Stigman.

Bemidji State returns to action again tomorrow with the first game versus University of Mary starting at noon then game two scheduled for 2 o’clock in Bismarck, N.D.
