Golden Bears sweep Beavers in home opening doubleheader

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) -- The Concordia University-St. Paul baseball team took an early lead in game one and scored consistently in game two Thursday to take a doubleheader sweep in Bemidji State University’s home opening series at BSU Baseball Field in Bemidji, Minn. The Beavers (7-15, 4-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) made a late rally in a 6-3 loss in game one before the Golden Bears (12-10, 6-4 NSIC) scored in eight of six innings of a 13-2 win over BSU.

Game One
Concordia-St. Paul scored the first five runs of the day, scoring two in the first and second and one in the fourth. Seniors Logan Riedel and Matt Mastantuono each singled in the fifth inning to drive in one RBI and cut the Golden Bears’ lead to 5-1. Riedel added the next run in the sixth with a sac fly to left field as senior Duane Miller came in to score. CSP struck out four BSU batters over the final two innings and added a solo home run in the seventh inning.

BSU starting pitcher Jack Wittwer (0-2) took the loss in game one after throwing 2.0 innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Golden Bears starter Blake Stelzer (1-1) earned the win while going 5.0 innings with two earned runs allowed on four hits with seven strikeouts. Jake Kounkel (2) earned the save for CSP after entering in the sixth inning with the bases loaded, including the tying run at the plate, and totaling four strikeouts.

Game Two
Sophomore Gunner Olszewski drove in his seventh RBI of the season in the first inning of game two to give BSU a 1-0 lead early. Concordia-St. Paul followed in the top of the second inning with four runs on six hits, including two doubles. The Golden Bears added to its lead with a two-run home run past the monster in left field during the fourth inning to go up 6-1. CSP built a 9-1 lead before BSU could add another run, coming from senior Collin Eckman on an RBI single down the left field line. The Golden Bears scored four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to force the game to end after the Beavers failed to score in the bottom of the eighth.

BSU starter Alec Meyer (0-2) was credited with the loss after 4.0 innings of work with six earned runs allowed on eight hits. CSP starter Riley Sweeney (2-0) went 5.2 innings with two earned runs allowed on three hits with four strikeouts.

Bemidji State continues its 10-game home stretch with a four-game series against University of Sioux Falls April 1-2. The Beavers and Cougars play two doubleheaders beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday from BSU Baseball Field.
