Marauders damage Beavers postseason bid with midweek sweep

BISMARCK, N.D. (Bismarck Municipal Ballpark) -- A pair of 3-2 losses from the Bemidji State University baseball program damaged its bid for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference postseason tournament Wednesday afternoon at University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. BSU’s (10-20, 13-29 NSIC) final innings came down to one-run games but U-Mary (11-32, 7-27 NSIC) held on for the slim victories.

Game One
The Marauders scored one run in each of the second and third innings, the first coming on an RBI single by Daulton Sauce and the second after a bases loaded error. U-Mary loaded the bases in the third with no outs but was limited to one run to go up, 2-0. Junior Scott Litchy accounted for both of BSU’s runs on the day, first cutting the Mary lead in half with an RBI single to right field in the top of the fifth inning. After Mary rebuilt the lead to two runs, Litchy knocked out his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning to set the final at 3-2.

Beavers pitcher Connor McNallan (2-5) took the loss after throwing a complete game and allowing two earned runs on six hits. Marauders starting pitcher Travis Stevens (2-5) took the win after going 5.0 innings with one earned run allowed on five hits with two strikeouts. Nicholas Stobbe (1) earned his first save of the season after entering in the sixth inning and completing the game with one earned run allowed on three hits with three strikeouts.

Game Two
U-Mary took the first lead again in game two after scoring two runs in the third inning off an RBI single and an error to put the Marauders up, 2-0. U-Mary scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning as a stolen base led to an overthrow error and an unearned run. Senior Collin Eckman put up BSU’s first run the next inning with an RBI shot to left field, bringing in senior Logan Riedel. Riedel scored again for the Beavers’ final run of the game in the seventh inning despite putting the game-tying run on base with no outs in the top of the ninth.

BSU starting pitcher Ryan Fransen (3-2) threw a complete game in the loss while allowing one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Mary starting pitcher Clay Bassingthwaite (1-1) earned the win after completing 6.0 innings with one earned run allowed on three hits. Marauders pitcher Austin Ell (1) recorded his first save after throwing the final 2.1 innings with no runs and no hits allowed with two strikeouts.
