Bemidji State falls after early lead to Illinois-Springfield in series finale

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (UIS Baseball Field) -- Bemidji State University baseball scored quick Wednesday afternoon in the series finale at University of Illinois-Springfield but eventually fell, 23-5. The Beavers drop to 2-8 overall while freshman Parker Borg led the team with two RBIs.

Two hit by pitches set up an early lead for the Beavers, as freshman Parker Borg hit a two-RBI doubled to center field to drive in freshman Bryce Norby and senior Scott Litchy. Following the first inning, BSU put two runners on base again in the second, but could not extend the lead. The Prairie Stars took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second and extended it in the third with back-to-back six-run frames.

During the third inning, Bemidji State was able to cut into the Ill.-Springfield lead by two runs. Senior Connor McNallan followed a Litchy double with an RBI single and was later brought home on a passed ball. UIS recorded the second of their two six-run innings in the bottom half, though, to pull away again. The Prairie Stars scored runs in each of the final seven innings to increase their lead.

Sophomore Noah Boser led BSU with three hits, including a double and one RBI. Borg drove in two of BSU’s five runs while Litchy crossed home twice. Freshman pitcher Ethan Webb (0-2) took the loss after throwing 2.1 innings and facing 20 batters.

Bemidji State closes out its non-conference schedule with a doubleheader Thursday at University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Beavers and Tritons will throw the first pitch at 1 p.m. from UMSL Baseball Field in St. Louis.
