SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Ronken Field) -- Sophomore Isaiah Grancorvitz brought power in game one for Bemidji State University baseball against Augustana but the team fell in a series-opening doubleheader in Sioux Falls, S.D., Thursday afternoon. Grancorvitz hit a solo home run for his first of the season and second of his career as the Beavers (4-16, 2-6 NSIC) fell 4-1 and 8-1 to the No. 4 Vikings (22-1, 9-1 NSIC).
Game One – L, 10-1
Grancorvitz provided the extent of the Beavers’ offense in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run, his first of the season and second of his career, with the wind out to left field. Senior Bazil Zuehlke and sophomore Drake Wawro each recorded BSU’s two other hits, which were not enough to keep up with AU.
Augustana jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning behind an RBI triple, wild pitch and two-run home run for the game-winning runs. The Vikings continued to add two runs in each of the third and fourth innings before tacking on one run in each of the sixth and seventh frames.
Freshman Travis Carruth (1-3) took the loss after throwing 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and seven earned runs allowed.
Game Two – L, 8-1
The Vikings brought one run home in each of the third and fourth innings, the second on a solo home run, to take a 2-0 lead. The Beavers brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning after two walks but a strikeout with two outs ended the scoring threat. Two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning cut Augustana’s lead in half, 2-1, as sophomore Drake Wawro led off with a single and was brought in from first on an RBI double to left center field by freshman Parker Borg.
Augustana pulled away in the following innings with two runs in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings behind four hits and one Bemidji State error. Bemidji State put one runner on base in the ninth inning as freshman Caleb Carlson led off with a single to center field, but the Beavers could not make a come back.
Sophomore Alec Meyer (1-2) was given the loss after throwing 6.0 innings with six hits and two earned runs allowed. Senior Scott Litchy, Borg and Wawro each recorded one of BSU’s three hits on the day.
Bemidji State and Augustana will close out the four-game series Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. from Ronken Field.
