Beavers fall in final doubleheader of week against No. 4 Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Ronken Field) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team fell to No. 4 Augustana University in its final doubleheader of the four-game series Friday afternoon with losses of 14-0 and 9-3. Senior Scott Litchy went 3-for-5 with a double from the plate in game two as the Beavers drop to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Vikings improve to 24-1 overall and 11-1 in the conference.

Game One – L, 14-0
The Vikings continued their offense output from Thursday while jumping out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, the first three runs set up by a two-out error in the first inning. Augustana followed with 10 runs combined in the fourth and fifth frames, while limiting the Bemidji State battery to just three hits through five innings.

BSU put up its best chance to score in the bottom of the sixth inning as freshman Caleb Carlson sent a one-out double to left field and was moved over to third. He was stranded at third, though, as a ground out sent the game to the seventh.

Senior Connor McNallan (1-4) took the loss after throwing 3.2 innings with three strikeouts and four earned runs allowed. Freshman Mitchell Haldi threw in relief and retired five of nine batters faced by way of strikeout. Four Beavers recorded hits on the day, led by Carlson with the team’s only extra-base knock of the game.

Game Two – L, 9-3
The Beavers led off the bottom of the third inning with a single by freshman Bryce Norby and a double down the right field line by senior Scott Litchy but two strikeouts and a ground out ended the inning with runners stranded in scoring position. Augustana brought home runs in each of the first four innings before Bemidji State found the plate for the first time.

BSU found runners back in scoring position in the fourth inning following a walk, hit by pitch and an AU error with one out. Another hit by pitch allowed the Beavers to cross their first run of the day. Litchy stepped up with the bases loaded and put a single through the left side to drive in junior Koty Kissack. A fielder’s choice RBI by Carlson gave BSU its final run of the inning to cut the AU lead to 7-3.

Freshman Jackson Back (0-3) was credited with the loss after throwing 4.0 innings with nine hits and six earned runs allowed. Junior pitcher Jesse Palafox threw 4.0 innings of relief work, striking out four and allowing four hits. Litchy went 3-for-5 from the plate on the day with a double and RBI to lead the BSU bats. Carlson and Norby each added one RBI from the plate.

Bemidji State heads to the road Wednesday, April 4 to face Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., for a two-game series. The Beavers and Wolves will begin the doubleheader at 1 p.m. from Fossum Field.
