Huskies drop Beavers to win series on final day

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Faber Field) -- The Bemidji State University baseball program couldn’t carry its weekend momentum to St. Cloud, Minn., during the final two games of the home-and-home series against St. Cloud State University. The Beavers fell in game one, 6-0, before the Sunday sweep in a game two loss, 15-4.

Game One – L, 6-0
The Bemidji State batting corps was stumped from the plate through the first game at St. Cloud State. The team combined for just three hits throughout the day, including two from freshman Caleb Carlson. Carlson reached base three times on the day and advanced to second base twice, the only Beaver to reach scoring position.

The Huskies used home runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to build and extend their lead throughout the game. BSU was only able to place two runners on base following the 6-0 deficit in the top of the sixth inning.

Freshman Jackson Back (0-5) took the loss after throwing a complete game with a career-high six strikeouts. Sophomore Drake Wawro accounted for Bemidji State’s third hit, which came in the seventh inning.

Game Two – L, 15-4
BSU took a lead in game two after the first three batters as senior Scott Litchy brought in Carlson with an RBI single. The lead lasted until the bottom half of the opening frame as the Huskies scored two runs. SCSU scored in each of the first four innings, which included topping BSU’s three-run fourth inning with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

Sophomore Noah Boser, junior Koty Kissack and Litchy each recorded one RBI while freshman Austin Weisz ran out a triple in his only hit.

Bemidji State will play its final home games of the 2018 season Thursday, May 3 with a non-conference doubleheader against University of Minnesota Crookston. The Beavers and Golden Eagles begin their doubleheader at 4 p.m. from BSU Baseball Field.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota’s wooded region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, Bemidji State University sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
