Hawks sweep Beavers on final day of road series, 6-0 and 2-0

FORT SCOTT, Kan. (LaRoche Baseball Complex) -- On the final day of a four-game series, the Bemidji State University baseball team was swept while being held without a run in either game against Rockhurst University, 6-0 and 2-0. The Beavers fall to 1-3 overall while falling on the wrong end of a no-hitter in the final game of the series.

Game One – L, 6-0
Senior pitcher Jesse Palafox made the start for BSU in game one and gave up one hit before entering the second inning. A lead-off home run put Rockhurst in the lead early before adding another run in the third inning following two singles and a sacrifice fly. The Hawks put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single and a three-run double with the bases loaded.

Sophomore infielder Caleb Carlson set up a runner in scoring position in the second inning before RU scored with a triple down the right field line. Freshman Blake Huntley added two hits as the Beavers finished with three hits total on the day.

Palafox took the loss after throwing 4.0 innings with four hits and one earned allowed. He recorded five strikeouts against 15 batters faced. Junior pitcher Xavier Carrasco and sophomore pitcher Trevyn Wells each threw 1.0 inning in relief, combining for five strikeouts.

Game Two – L, 2-0
Bemidji State was no-hit in the final game of the series although put four runners on base via three walks and one Rockhurst error. Freshman Jacob Carlson led off the first and fifth sixth innings with walks, and added a stolen base in the opening frame, but was followed by three straight strikeouts in the first and a double play and strikeout in the sixth.

The Hawks brought in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning after a leadoff single, bunt and a fly out that advanced a runner to third base. RU came up with a two-out RBI to take the lead while two walks in the fifth inning allowed another RBI single to score the second run.

Sophomore pitcher Jackson Back (0-1) took the loss after throwing 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and three hits and one earned run allowed. Junior pitcher Alec Meyer threw 2.0 innings in relief with two strikeouts and two hits and one earned run allowed.

Bemidji State travels to Arizona March 6-12 for the Tucson Invitational Baseball games. BSU will open the spring break trip March 6 with a doubleheader against Presentation College at 4 p.m.
