Boser totals five RBI for Beaver Baseball in hit-fest versus Carthage

TUCSON, Ariz. (Kino Baseball Complex) -- Junior outfielder Noah Boser came up one double short of hitting for the cycle Friday as the Bemidji State University baseball team fell to Carthage College, 12-11. The Beavers and Red Men combined for 40 hits while Boser went 3-for-5 from the plate with five RBI.

Following an RBI single by Carthage to put it ahead in the top of the second inning, 1-0, Bemidji State recorded four straight singles to set up the go-ahead score. Boser put his first hit of the day through the right side to drive in sophomore Matt Kummet while sophomore Jackson Back recorded the first of his three hits through the left side to drive in sophomore Wyatt White. Carthage tied the game in the third inning before White and Boser recorded RBI hits, including a triple to right field by Boser, to retake the lead, 4-2.

The Red Men regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning and would not trail for the rest of the game. The Beavers were able to tie the game three times, twice off the bat of Boser. A sacrifice fly to right field tied the game at 5-5 while a two-run home run gave Boser his fifth RBI of the day to tie the game again at 8-8. Two doubles in the bottom of the eighth inning brought in three runs to again tie the game heading into the final frame.

An error by BSU allowed Carthage’s lead-off hitter to reach base while the game-winning run was scored three batters later on an RBI single to left field with two outs. Junior Drake Wawro pinch hit and led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a single before the potential game-tying run was moved into scoring position with one out. The Beavers flied out in back-to-back at-bats to end the game.

Boser was one of five Beavers with at least three hits, including his third career triple and second career home run. White, junior first baseman Kade Nelson, sophomore outfielder Jackson Back, and sophomore catcher Matt Kummet each finished with three hits. White scored three runs while Kummet and Nelson each recorded two. Through the game, BSU left 10 runners stranded on base.

Senior pitcher Tommy Geisenhof (0-1) took the loss after throwing 1.2 innings with two hits and one unearned run allowed. Freshman Kevin Smith made the start on the mound for BSU and threw 5.0 innings with four earned runs allowed and two strikeouts. The BSU pitching staff helped strand 12 Carthage baserunners on the paths.

Bemidji State continues the Tucson Baseball Invitational Saturday with a 10 a.m. first pitch local time against Briar Cliff College.
