Beavers fall in weekend-opening doubleheader to Mavericks

MANKATO, Minn. (Bowyer Field) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team was swept during its weekend-opening doubleheader against Minnesota State University, Mankato, 10-0 and 13-0. Sophomore Blake Huntley extended his hitting streak to five games while freshman Jacob Carlson extended his reached base streak to 10 games.

Game One – L, 10-0
The Minnesota State pitching staff gave Bemidji State fits through the first five innings of play and was set up with a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Mavericks took the lead with a three-run home run and an unearned RBI double before leading off the third inning with five hits in the first six at-bats that doubled the MSU lead, 8-0. The Beavers put one runner on base in the second inning before getting their first hit of the day in the third.

Sophomore pitcher Trevyn Wells entered to pitch in the fourth inning and stranded two MSU runners on base after loading the bases with no outs. Wells held MSU to just one run in the fourth inning and allowed the final run of the game in the fiftn inning after back-to-back hits.

BSU finally put the bat on the ball in the sixth and seventh innings, totaling four of the team’s five hits between the two frames. Two runners were left stranded in each inning while BSU finished the game 1-of-5 hitting with runners in scoring position.

Freshman Jacob Carlson extended his reached base streak to 10 games with a single in the sixth inning while juniors Noah Boser and Isaiah Grancorvitz, and sophomores Blake Huntley and Austin Weisz each also recorded one hit. Wells threw 4.0 innings with one earned run allowed on five hits with one strikeout. Junior pitcher Xavier Carrasco (0-2) took the loss after throwing the first 3.0 innings.

Game Two – L, 13-0
After senior pitcher Alec Meyer (0-1) retired the MSU side in the top of the first, the Mavericks put up three runs in the top of the second inning. The Mavericks' hitters added an additional one run in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings while scoring three in the fifth to help end the game early in seven innings.

The Beavers reached just three base-runners on the day, including Huntley who recorded the team's only hit in the third inning. Meyer took the loss after throwing 4.0 innings while sophomore Ethan Webb threw the final 3.0 innings.

Bemidji State and Minnesota State will close the four-game series with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. Sunday. The first game will be a nine-inning, NSIC contest followed by a seven-inning, non-conference game.
