Huntley totals three hits as Warriors take doubleheader over Beavers

WINONA, Minn. (Loughrey Field) -- Sophomore Blake Huntley totaled three hits Wednesday afternoon as the Bemidji State University baseball team fell in a doubleheader sweep to Winona State University, 3-2 and 9-3. Huntley recorded two hits in game two with two runs batted in as the Beavers fall to 2-22 overall and 1-11 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

Game Three – L, 3-2
Bemidji State’s pitching staff was stellar during game one but saw one inning decide the final outcome. Freshman pitcher Kevin Smith (0-2) threw 4.0 innings and left five Winona State runners on base through the first three innings. He took the loss after allowing three earned runs in the fourth inning on four hits, while still stranding two runners during the frame.

Two of BSU’s five hits in the game came back-to-back to begin the bottom of the fifth inning as junior Isaiah Grancorvitz set up a two-run home run by sophomore Caleb Carlson. Carlson’s second career home run brought BSU within one run of WSU, 3-2. The Beavers reached two runners on base in the sixth inning before the home side of the seventh inning was struck out to end the game.

Smith finished with eight hits allowed, including just one extra-base knock, and one walk with one strikeout. Sophomore pitcher Travis Carruth threw 2.2 innings with two hits allowed and one strikeout while senior pitcher Jesse Palafox entered struck his only batter faced.

Game Four – L, 9-3
The Warriors scored all nine runs before the Beavers were able to get momentum from the plate. WSU scored two runs in the top of the first inning before adding three in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth to go ahead, 9-0. Of the nine runs, WSU knocked in six RBI and left eight runners on base.

Sophomore Wyatt White started BSU’s rally in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single to left field, driving in sophomore Matt Kummet. Sophomore Blake Huntley added the final two runs for BSU on a single to set the final score at 9-3.

Huntley went 2-of-3 hitting with two RBI while White was the only other Beaver to record multiple hits, going 2-of-4 with one RBI and one run. Sophomore Zack Henderson (0-1) threw 3.1 innings with two strikeouts while taking his first loss of the season. Senior pitcher Ben Bauer threw 3.0 innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts while giving up just one earned run.
