White walk-off home run highlights series opening doubleheader versus USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Sioux Falls Stadium) -- The sophomore duo of Matt Kummet and Wyatt White each recorded their first career home runs for the Bemidji State University baseball team, including a two-run walk-off home run to take game one over University of Sioux Falls. The Beavers won the first of their three-game series against the Cougars, 5-4, before falling in seven innings of game two, 20-2.

Game One – W, 5-4
White brought in BSU’s first run of game one during the sixth inning to start the squad’s comeback win. White doubled to center field to drive in sophomore Caleb Carlson after Sioux Falls had taken a 4-0 lead after the third inning.

The Beavers’ began its four-run seventh inning with a reached base on a fielding error followed by a hit by pitch to put two runners on base. After the second out of the inning was recorded, Carlson singled to center field to put the game-winning run at the plate. White followed during the next at-bat with his first career home run to give BSU its second win in conference play.

White finished 2-for-4 from the plate, both going for extra bases, with three RBI and one run scored. Carlson accounted for two RBI and two runs while sophomore Blake Huntley went 2-for-4 from the plate with one run scored. Sophomore pitcher Trevyn Wells (1-0) earned the win after throwing 1.1 innings in relief with one strikeout. Senior pitcher Jesse Palafox received a no decision after pitching the first 5.2 innings with five strikeouts.

Game Two – L, 20-2
Bemidji State fell behind early after two big innings from Sioux Falls, coming in the second and fourth. USF scored six runs in the second frame off five hits, while only one run was earned. The Cougars then followed in the fourth inning with 10 runs on seven hits, including seven two-out runs, to go ahead, 16-0.

BSU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as sophomore Matt Kummet knocked out a two-run home run, the first dinger of his career. After the BSU home run, the Beavers recorded four hits and left five runners on base as the game was concluded after the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Tom Keohen went 2-for-3 with a double while Kummet finished with two RBI on his home run knock.

Bemidji State and Sioux Falls will close out the three-game series Monday at 2 p.m.
