Beaver Baseball fights to final out in 7-4 loss to Wolves Saturday

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team fought down to the last out despite a 7-4 loss to Northern State University to finish its three-game series Saturday afternoon at BSU Baseball Field. The Beavers came back from a 7-2 deficit in the top of the ninth inning with two outs before a play at the plate ended the game.

Northern State scored five of its runs through the first three innings, finishing with two hits in each inning for a 5-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth. Junior Isaiah Grancorvitz provided BSU’s first run in the fourth inning as part of three straight singles to begin the frame. Grancorvitz put a single to left center field to drive in sophomore Wyatt White, while junior Kade Nelson was brought home two batters later on a wild pitch to set the Beavers’ deficit at 5-2.

After the Wolves scored another two runs in the seventh inning, the Beavers began to fight back in the top of the ninth with two outs. BSU reached four straight batters on two hits and two errors, which allowed two runs to score. The first scored on a wild pitch while another wild pitch nearly brought in the third run of the inning, but the base runner was called out at home after being tagged by the catcher to end the game.

Nelson and sophomore Jackson Back each led BSU with two hits on the day while Grancorvitz accounted for the team’s lone RBI. The BSU relief pitchers continued to throw effectively while allowing just four hits and two earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched. Sophomore pitcher Kenny Morris and senior pitcher Alec Meyer each went 2.0 innings while senior pitcher Ben Bauer threw the final inning.

Bemidji State travels to Bismarck, N.D., April 24 to take on University of Mary in a mid-week doubleheader. The Beavers and Marauders begin game one at 1 p.m. at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark.
