Grancorvitz sparks late rally that falls short in season finale at UMD

DULUTH, Minn. (Bulldog Park) -- Junior Isaiah Grancorvitz helped give the Bemidji State University baseball team a late spark Saturday afternoon in its season-finale doubleheader against University of Minnesota Duluth with a sixth-inning, game-tying home run in game two. The Beavers fell to the Bulldogs in both games on the day, 12-2 and 4-3, to finish their 2019 campaign.

Game Three – L, 12-2
The Bulldogs controlled game one from the start while putting up five runs in the first three innings. Bemidji State recorded two of its four total hits between the first and second innings but left just one runner on base through the first six frames.

The Beavers were able to get momentum in the top of the seventh inning after loading the bases and bringing in two runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. UMD ended the game early by answering BSU’s attack with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Wyatt White recorded two of BSU’s four hits in the game, while Grancorvitz and junior Noah Boser accounted for the other two. Boser drove in one RBI on his single while senior Drake Wawro brought in BSU’s second run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Sophomore pitcher Jackson Back received the loss after throwing 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Game Four – L, 4-3
UMD again got an early jump on BSU with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, recording an RBI double and two-RBI single with two outs. Freshman pitcher Zack Henderson entered to pitch after the first inning and held the Bulldogs in check with just two hits and no walks allowed with four strikeouts to keep the Beaver bats within reach.

BSU came within one run of UMD in the top of the fourth inning as Grancorvitz led off with a single before eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly. Junior Kade Nelson reached base after Grancorvitz on an error and scored the second run of the inning on a UMD error. Grancorvitz struck again in the top of the sixth inning with his second of three hits on the day, a lead-off home run to tie the game at 3-3. BSU put two runners on base with two outs following the game-tying run but left them stranded. UMD put up its only run past the first inning in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out double and an RBI single to steal the win.

Grancorvitz recorded three of BSU’s four hits in game two and added two runs and one RBI. Sophomore Matt Kummet recorded BSU’s fourth hit and drove in Grancorvitz on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Henderson, senior pitcher Tommy Geisenhof, and sophomore pitcher Travis Carruth combined to throw 5.0 innings in relief, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
