MINNEAPOLIS (US Bank Stadium) -- Facing a large deficit early, the Bemidji State University baseball team rallied to a near comeback Saturday afternoon during a 9-8 loss to Rockhurst University at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
The Beavers allowed seven runs between the first and second innings before outscoring the Hawks, 8-2, over the remainder of the game and move to 2-1 overall this season.
The Hawks opened the first inning with two runs on two hits before adding another five on six hits in the second. Junior pitcher Ethan Webb entered to pitch and left the bases loaded to get out of the inning facing a 7-0 deficit. Rockhurst added another run in the top of the fourth inning before Bemidji State gained momentum from the plate.
Junior designated hitter Parker Borg led off the fourth inning with his lone hit of the day to set up an RBI single by freshman infielder Carter Simon. Three of BSU’s first four batters of the fifth inning reached base while Borg recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice for BSU’s second run of the game. Senior outfielder Noah Boser and junior infielder Sam Kalberer each hit RBI singles down the left-field line as part of a two-run sixth inning.
Junior outfielder Austin Weisz led off the seventh inning with a single as the first five batters reached base. Two BSU baserunners scored on walks while the final run of the inning came in on an RBI single by Kalberer. BSU exited the inning facing a 9-8 deficit and although the Beavers pitchers held the Hawks off the board, Bemidji State left its only runner stranded on base through the eighth and ninth frames.
Senior catcher Isaiah Grancorvitz led BSU with three hits in six at-bats. Kalberer brought in two RBI on two hits with one walk. Simon and Weisz each finished with two hits and one run scored.
Senior pitcher Xavier Carrasco (0-1) took the loss after allowing five earned runs in 1.0 inning of action. Webb threw 3.0 innings with a team-high three strikeouts while Sophomore pitcher Zack Henderson also threw 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. Junior pitcher Levi Arnold threw 2.0 innings with one hit and one walk allowed with one strikeout.
Bemidji State travels next to Liberty, Mo., Feb. 28-March 1 for a four-game series at William Jewell College.
