TUCSON, Ariz. (Kino Sports Complex) -- Bemidji State University baseball recorded late runs Sunday afternoon but fell in a 9-3 contest to Concordia University-St. Paul at the Tucson Invitational Games in Tucson, Ariz.
The Beavers were only able to total three hits compared to 17 for the Golden Bears as BSU falls to 2-8 overall this season.
Junior pitcher Trevyn Wells (0-2) fared well against CSP early in the game while stranding two base runners and recording two strikeouts over the first two innings. Wells led off the bottom of the third inning with his third strikeout of the game but the Golden Bears followed to score two runs, including one unearned, on three hits and one error.
After trailing CSP 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Wells retired the Golden Bears side in order to preserve the score heading into the fifth. Concordia-St. Paul pulled away in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs on five hits and added another three runs in the seventh.
Junior Parker Borg and sophomore Tom Keohen led off the top of the ninth inning by reaching base to set up the first two of BSU’s three runs in the inning. Following a strikeout and a lineout, BSU drew two walks to bring in two runs while a CSP fielding error brought in the third run of the inning. The game ended on a strikeout as the bases were left loaded.
Senior Kade Nelson led BSU from the plate with two hits while junior Wyatt White accounted for the team’s other hit of the game, a double in the second inning. White and junior Matt Kummet each recorded an RBI in the ninth inning following the bases loaded walks. The Beavers ended the game 0-of-8 from the plate with runners in scoring position.
Wells took the loss after throwing 4.1 innings with three strikeouts and five earned runs allowed. Junior pitcher Levi Arnold threw 2.2 innings in relief with seven hits and four earned runs allowed while senior Xavier Carrasco threw 1.0 inning with no hits or walks allowed.
Bemidji State will play Southwest Minnesota State University at 11 a.m. (CDT) Monday for its fourth of five games during the Tucson Invitational Games in Tucson, Ariz.
