Cougars sweep Sunday doubleheader to win series over Beavers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Sioux Falls Stadium) -- The Bemidji State University baseball team was swept during a Sunday doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls, 4-0 and 9-3, in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Beavers fall 2-11 overall and 1-7 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games.

Game Two – L, 4-0
Bemidji State had troubles getting runners on base through the first four innings as it recorded one hit and drew one walk. Junior Sam Kalberer singled in the second before being stranded while freshman Carter Simon drew a walk in the third inning before being picked off to end the top half.

In the bottom of the second inning, Sioux Falls hit a two-run home run to take their only lead of the game. The Cougars extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-out, two-RBI single to center field.

BSU drew another walk in the fifth inning that was stranded before senior Noah Boser hit a double to right field in the sixth for the team’s best scoring opportunity. Boser advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out but wasn’t advanced following a strikeout and a ground out. The game ended on a double play in the top of the seventh inning after junior Parker Borg hit a one-out single to center field.

Junior pitcher Levi Arnold (0-3) threw a complete game at 6.0 innings with a career-high seven strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits with one walk allowed.

Game Three – L, 9-3
Boser led off game three with a walk, which would prove to be BSU’s only baserunner over the first three innings. The Cougars added two runs on two hits in the second inning and one run on an RBI single in the third before the Beavers recorded their first hit in the top of the fourth.

Kalberer recorded BSU’s first base-knock with two outs in the third inning to spark four straight hits. Sophomore Michael O’Malley and junior Brendan Paul hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut USF’s lead to one, 3-2. A double steal brought in O’Malley from third to tie the game, 3-3, heading into the fourth inning.

USF regained the lead in the fourth inning as a lead-off walk set up an RBI triple and an RBI ground out. The Cougars pushed the lead to three again, 6-3, behind a lead-off double in the fifth and a sac fly. BSU was unable to reach a baserunner in the fifth and sixth innings and left two runners stranded in the seventh as its deficit stayed at three. USF used a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to push its lead to 9-3.

Bemidji State again left two runners on base in the top of the eighth inning and were sent down in order to finish the game.

Paul and O’Malley each recorded an RBI for BSU with singles while Borg and Kalberer each also recorded singles. Freshman Jacob Mathiason (0-1) threw the first 3.0 innings with four earned runs on four hits allowed.

Bemidji State ends its seven-game road trip Tuesday, March 30 with a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. at Upper Iowa University.
