BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Baseball Field) -- Freshman Carter Simon accounted for all of Bemidji State University baseball’s runs Sunday during a 15-3 loss to Northern State University during the series finale at BSU Baseball Field. Simon went 3-of-3 from the plate with his second home run of the season as the Beavers fall to 5-25 overall and 4-21 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Northern State drew a walk during the first at-bat of the day to set up a two-out RBI double to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. BSU followed back with two one-out hits in the bottom of the first inning, including a double from junior Sam Kalberer to extend his on-base streak to 20 games. His hit through the left side put runners on second and third but both were stranded to preserve the NSU lead.
The Wolves extended their lead with a six-run second inning, which included an RBI single, a score on a Beaver error, a three-run home run and a sacrifice fly. Northern State crossed one run in the top of the third inning for an 8-0 lead before Bemidji State lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. BSU led off the inning with a hit followed by a fielder’s choice to set up a two-run home run by Simon. Simon’s second home run of the season cut BSU’s deficit to six, 8-2.
NSU added to its lead again to start the sixth inning with four runs on no outs. Two walks and a single set up two two-RBI singles for the Wolves’ runs to take a 10-run, 12-2 lead. The Wolves’ lead was again extended in the top of the seventh inning behind two home runs while the Beavers added one final run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Simon.
Simon went 3-of-3 from the plate with a home run, three RBI and a walk while Kalberer went 2-of-4 with one double. Freshman pitcher Christian Turner (0-1) took the loss after giving up five earned runs on four hits with two walks in his 1.0 inning pitched.
Bemidji State went 0-of-7 from the plate with two outs, 1-of-11 with runners in scoring position and 5-of-17 with runners on base. Northern State went 9-of-22 with runners on base and 7-of-14 with runners in scoring position while totaling 16 hits on the day.
Bemidji State returns for a midweek doubleheader at the BSU Baseball Field at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28 against the University of Mary.
